It took the pa state police about 20 days to process my application after they took the finger prints.

After that w/ the twic it took 8 days and was a few $ cheaper

The simplest way to make your life easier is to use common sense, and to always pay attention.

Always do a thorough pre-trip on every trailer you are about to hook up to.

The hose tubes are always empty, and the hoses in the tray are always dirty. Carry extra plugs & caps. And wash out your pump every chance you get.

Don't ever hesitate to ask questions - it's always better to ask, than to try to figure it out on our own and risk getting hurt or having a spill.

Also, remember that plant personnel and equipment always have right-of-way.

I hope this helps you in your career as a tanker yanker. If I can ever help some more, just ask!

Thanks for all your post. I have a phone interview with Schneider on Thursday and I am hoping to drive tankers out of Charlotte, NC. Any advice?

Once Schneider hands off the keys its all you. Therefore it is essential to Grab extra drivers report sheets (just hoard everything not nailed down regarding transflow), a power inverter, a wireless card for the lap top, lots of extra bedding, an additional alarm clock cause 3 am comes a lot earlier for some than it does for others, CLEANING SUPPLIES for the truck, winshield washer fluid, baby wipes, a TA one card, cash, extra hygene essentials, and sunglasses.

having these items makes everything else easy.

Hello. I'm thinking about driving for Schneider (I'm based in the Philadelphia area) but they want me to take a refresher course (would find it to be fun in my opinion) but the questions I have are, what is it like pulling a tank compared to a reefer trailer? Are you happy with the training and have the dispatchers/company been pretty easy on newbie tank drivers?

    Thanks.

I've covered a lot, but the Schneider Way hasn't been stressed. To me the Schneider way boils down to don't screw the guy after you and take the heat.

The guy after you doesn't need to pick up a tank with water in it, or with a low tire. The guy after you doesn't need to respond to the attitude you left with a customer or with a 4 wheeler who got taught a lesson on the road.

Taking the heat though means you stop the argument by containing it to your ears only. Listen to the complaint, don't try to pass it off on others and let the flame run its course and burn itself out. This goes toward not leaving a mess for the next guy.

As a Schneider driver, you get to hear a lot of attitude from other drivers. I was waiting for a repair to be done to my truck at an independent shop. There was another driver waiting who had once been accepted by Schneider. While at orientation, after the instructor mentioned that there were many tests and paperwork to complete, this guy started asking questions that got the whole room off track. Instead of getting the paperwork done he started asking if Schneider would fly him home if there was a family emergency and other irrelevant questions. Schneider ultimately decided not to hire him. Now he was turning on me, telling me that Schneider doesn't pay layover pay during repairs. I didn't justify his attitude with a response, he had a bone to pick and I wasn't going to change his opinion. Schneider does pay layover pay by the way.

Similarly, there is a guy on this forum who rants that Schneider doesn't care about it's employees and uses as proof quotes that a Schneider President made in congressional testimony. The president pointed out that drivers are a big expense and that Schneider was doing all it could to keep this expense minimized. What he said was nothing that any other big trucking company wasn't doing.

Here is my view. Schneider didn't lay anyone off in 08/09 when business fell off considerably. Miles were rationed, but everyone kept their jobs. By picking tankers with Schneider, I am making more per mile than I would be after a few years driving van with most other companies. I am getting as many miles as I want, that's why I haven't been able to post much lately.

Go ahead and say I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, my favorite flavor is Orange!:biggrin_255:

I'm leaning heavily toward Tankers. The job prospects down the road a couple years are phenomenal.
