Ok so I am going to hire a driver for my second truck and I want to pay fair so that I keep him/her happy and paid at the same time. I was wondering what you guys felt is a fair pay percentage wise. My operation is a regional type and mileage isn't very high. I get my settlements at 77% of the revenue. Average revenue for the truck is around $3500 per week and only averaging approx 1200 miles per week on a high week. I am home every day almost and off on weekends and holidays. I like it that way for myself. What do you guys think?
Average % pay for employee?

Well I believe we will be adding a couple more trucks within a couple months. Not sure if you're area would work but I can check to see. We are based in Warren, Ohio and only run Ohio, Indiana, Upstate New York, Western Pa, Wv, and occasionally Illinois.
I am very happy with this operation and hope to grow well with it. As of now we are a 4 man operation 3 o/o and our authority owner/dispatcher/business partnerLast edited: Mar 5, 2012

$3500 revenue for 1200 miles? Sign me up for that. I'm just down the river and got my own authority. I usually am getting $3800 revenue for about 1800 total miles.

20% is what our guys get.

One of the trucks leased to us has an employee in it and he gets 30%. This is for a flatbed plus 100% of tarps, detention, etc.
25% is the average for vans/reefer that I have seen.bbblotliz Thanks this. -
The jobs I worked on percentage I always got 26-33%. But it's hard for a driver to find a job that gets you home every weekend and through the week that pays over $700/wk. I did work some jobs where I was able to make 50-60k/yr. But I had to bust ### and stay on the road to do it. It seems to me the best would be if you could start a guy out somewhere around $600/wk and if he's making his deliveries on time and not tearing up your equipment give him a little bump at 90 days, and then maybe a little bump after a year if he's making you money. It's always nice when you get called in the boss's office and he bumps you up a percent !
silver dollar Thanks this. -
Wow. 600 a week? To drive a semi? I mean do you want the thing in a ditch or what? I wouldn't roll out of bed period for some shlep paying 600 a week to be on the road. Thats just crazy. As a driver guys want between 1000 and 1200 a week. Thats pretty much the norm. If you can't provide that prepare to be replacing a whole lot of parts. Just sayin.

Tell me the name of a company that pays between 1000-1200 a week where you are home everyday and off weekends and holidays...

I guess location is a big factor. I see the previous poster is from Homewood, IL up by Joliet, IL. I live by a little town down by Peoria, IL where you can rent a nice house with a yard for $650/month. Maybe I am out of touch with $600 though. Down here though the only driving jobs I know that pay $1000-$1200 I'd have to drive up past Homewood every day or else live in the truck at least a couple weeks at a time. You got a good point though, you don't want to try to save money by hiring a newb, they'll tear your truck up so bad you'll wind up paying more in repairs or hit a school bus and put you out of business or something. I had that $1200/wk job and was driving a 2012 KW, but now I'm buying my own truck. I must be sick in the head !
