Did you get that in writing?![]()
I'm only been on here for 2 months but I can't believe what companies tell you and you don't ask more questions. Write down a fake one, then why do they need it at all is what you should ask your company. Then ask, if I refuse what is the company policy? Your asking a guy that sits behind a phone or whatever just coming up with crap so you will leave him alone. This sounds like a big deal to me, banks and mortgage companies us DL to verify who you are for credit and other agencies as well. If companies need to look at your DL to verify who you are that is one thing but to copy oh no, unless it is needed by law, military, or other official offices then the company should not ask for numbers. If they are worried about theft it's called a security camera inside and out to get your face and truck. I like the one guy's response to get the guys name that is asking for it for your record in case of ID fraud. I say go one step further ask for his DL# as well for your records. It is only fair you don't know him and he doesn't know you.
Have him write down a fake DL# in his hand writing on the document. If this is a regulation, law, or Act you just falsified possibly legal documents that if who ever over sees the regulation, law, or Act, that is punishable by law if audited and they check records carefully. OK will they not in a snowballs chance in h***. But your trucking company should be able the find out. Oh that is right only if they care about their drivers and family's welfare.
All you drivers out there email your companies and ask what their policies are and why should you have to give it to shippers? If they say no just the ones that have a strict need to know because of Fed, military, or stuff like that then it should be something from the company you drive for stating this is that company's policy in accordance with whatever law, regulation or agreement and be stated with the other required data you get to do the job. You see what I'm getting at. Just think, (sorry don't mean to point finger or a bad subject, but good example and true) illegal's can forge SS#, ID's and other documents, how many stores, banks, or any place for that matter know what their state license look like let alone another states if just slightly altered if at all. Most get it and put in their wallet, purse, or whatever. That DL# is not only for possible credit fraud but is feeding your family. That is very important # just to give it out to any Tom, Dick, and Harry. If you don't take it upon yourself to protect and ask more questions and make your company come up with it in writing under company policy what governs them to ask for this type of information and if they will not do it, then why do you have to give it.
Maybe this sight could do a mass email to the companies they have listed and post it on here each companies response? Maybe if we ask nicely.
Man did I put the board on the spot or what.
Before you thank me, your welcome message board up keep people.![]()

You do have to show your dl ID to shippers or receivers if they are government contracted when asked. They do have requirements that you provide your dl ID by law and you have to provide your ID at these controlled areas, or you just dont go in. I inspected logs at these shippers and receivers regularly to make sure they were in government compliance in registering all driver licenses, or that shipper/ receiver looses their contract.

Yeah, that is an annoying practice. The first time I ever had that happen was at the fedex in Compton, California. They took my license and wouldn't give it back until I checked back in with the guard to leave with my load! -
and when you say something, the response is, everyone else does it with no problem
so you are left looking like a complainer, (to the shipper and your company)
basically, such things should be illegal
if i am driving a $100,000 compan;y truck with a large company logo on the side, and there are no reports of stolen trucks, why is it even a concern?
who wants their frozen vegetables?
mind you, there are some thieves in the world, but you do not infringe on the rights of the law abiding citizens in hopes of catching the occasional thief
but then again, thats what we do, as of lateInd0792 Thanks this. -

I can't remember if I ever got asked for my DL and SSN#. I have been asked to show proof of registration and insurance for a load though. They didn't copy anything down, they just wanted to see that I had it. I had my credit identity stolen by a family member... needless to say I don't go to very many Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners, nor do I hand my info out to strangers.

Wish I knew about that 6-7 years ago when it all started. Just now getting everything back right. -
The shippers asking for the info, were they a high security type of freight? My company pulls a lot of air freight as I am sure a lot of you do. They require a lot of security measures. They always require us to check in with security and show our DL before we can move around. I do like the fact that security is tight, but your point is very good also. Wonder if they had to stop seeing our DL how they might still account for all of the drivers hanging around? Logic would show that if we pulled in with a BOL and it matches their days expected loads we probably belong there. Check the seal and move on. But that would just be too easy wouldnt it?

Another thing is the federal government coming down on states with certain practices on issuiing licenses and I.D.'s and what they use for proof of citizenship and who the car holder really is. This is basically for standardization as a federal government accepted proof of identity. In todays world it is getting more and more strict in consumer food distribution and production (dont ask me how illegals are able to work in meat plants, I am dumbfounded) and water plants. Seems though recording is mostly done at the shippers gates of identities of drivers and that is done with a drivers license which is one of only few federally accepted docments of identity. Shippers that have any contract with the government no matter how small that contract may be will more than likely have to ask you for your license to be recorded. Sorry folks that is just the way it is. And there are probably alot of shippers that deal with government contracts out there. It's not more or less a shipper is trying to make your life hard, or asking without authority for that state document. Any security guard has that authority if that shipper is contracted. There is federal law that mandates it. But when asked it comes down to you if you provide that document or not. By federal law they cannot let you in without proper ID. I would recommend not providing fake ID or changing numbers. If in the event something happened that those records are recalled it may make your life alot more consumed real quick.
