"Backing up a Flat bed makes your skills lazy":biggrin_2552:

Get a grip. Those of us running open decks get into some very unique situations. Statements like this are NOT gonna help you find someone to practice with.

And I doubt your that good on your shifting every tranny is different with your exp you're either luggin it or grindin. I've drove over 150 trucks and I will grind a few til I learn the truck. Anyways good luck I guess.

The Indiana DMV is bringing a truck 100 miles... on their dime... to give you a road test? You've got to be the luckiest guy on earth right now or something...

Heck... if they're going to that extreme, they'll probably end up passing you regardless.

I'm sorry to everyone! I should of never even made this post. I remember when I drove OTR I met so many absolutely fantastic drivers, guys that went way beyond to help out. I was just freaked out when the state told me about the required pre-trip, 3 type backing test & road test and except for my recent job driving a curtain side and road test with Pro-Fleet Flat bed, I hadn't backed up a van in a while.

I realize that flat bedding is a thinking man's truck driving job. I meant that in my case it was a little easier backing up when you could look out your mirror(s) and see across to the other side, which I know isn't always the case. And humpin' those tarps should be like $80.00 on, 40 off.

I do realize every truck is different, especially when it comes to shifting the transmission. My Freightliner at Roehl had over 300k and shifted pretty smoothly. I did get this new job and the frtliner I'm driving now has over a half million miles and shifts like ####e. So I guess you can take some pleasure in knowing I've been put in my place, 'cause now I do actually shift like you guys were describing me. I'd really like to ask the owner (my new boss), to change to synthetic gear oil but he's a little scary.

I really don't think anybody here gives a crap about my story. The State basically did not properly communicate to me that they had invalidated my CDL. When I went to the BMV they couldn't find anything wrong with it. The truck was not going anywhere for me. It was going where it was going, an Indiana CDL testing site. I had to work my schedule to their convience. I did the 3 backing tests with 3 pull-ups & 1 get out and look, did the road test fine, had the most difficulty with the Pre-trip. But got 'er done. So I've been working this week learning how to drive over-loaded and over 14 hrs. Ya I wish I knew of some place I could go for some advise.

Anyway I am sorry, I have the utmost respect for truckers, and I'm not 1 yet and I know that.

I'm glad you got it reinstated, and that you are working again.

Different set ups shift differently, if you were used to a Detroit before and have a Cummins now, it changes the timing and sound, Cummins (N-14) especially are too quick to watch the tach. I'm running a Detroit with a reman and it doesn't shift much different than the old one.
