I've picked up 2 loads this week that put me heavy on my steer axle even after adjusting the 5th wheel all the way out. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there some issue with the pro star trucks?

I never had this kind of problem with other trucks I've driven.

Do you haul refrigerated freight? (if so, then you know that reefer unit is a problem.

DO you have an APU unit? If so, you are "allowed" I believe 400 pounds.

I would suggest that when the entire rig is empty get onto a Cat scale (or any other brand) and weigh up. Some say half full tanks of fuel is one way to weigh, but I personally would weigh with FULL fuel tanks, and all the gear you normally have with you while on the road.

It may very well be possible, that your particular 5th wheel is not able to go back (say) one more slot. Or, the positioning of the 5th wheel frame to the vehicle frame, needs to be set back, which only a shop can do. But then, IH may have already done whatever testing they needed to do, and placed the 5th wheel frame right where it needs to be.

One last thing to consider, is the loads you have picked up. It is highly possible, that the loader did not properly distribute the load properly, meaning that he put ALL the heaviest freight up front.

I do not have an apu and not hauling reefer. I was able to go back to the shipper and have the load moved around. That did the trick on the 2nd problem load. But the first one was changed 3 times. I started thiinking it was the scale I was using and drove to another one. But, it didn't change. Still about 280 lbs heavt on the steers.

I ended up giving the load to another truck. Don't know if he scaled it or if he had the same problem. I just knew I wasn't going to drive it across 5 states.

Yeah, what was your gross weight and your payload and the product ? And do you know how to load a trailer, or do you let the forklift jock just do his thing ? You, the driver, needs to know how to load a trailer, because probably half of forklift jocks only know to put said freight on said trailer and could care less on even distribution.

What are the numbers? How much is your steer axle rated for, what are the tires rated for, what was your gross weight? Numbers please!

I've been having that same issue with the prostar I'm in and my fifth wheel has always been on the last hole.Always in the middle of 11k and real close on 12k with a heavy load and full tanks.never had that issue with my Volvo which I know was light.

    I have an 08 Pornstar....same issue!

The fuel tanks are positioned so far forward, that all fuel weight is directed to steer axle. We haul 45k regularly, and CA 40' tandem/king-pin a big issue. I keep my 5th wheel 3 holes from the rear hole.

Your heavy loads must be loaded with:
single, double, single, and double back to the 44' zone in the trailer.

Exceptionally heavy, like lumber products, (fencing bundled groups) should be:
single, single, single, double until the last 4 singles.

Remember, your fuel weight is on the steers....so that is where you will lose your weight from fuel consumption.

Will sound stupid,I thought so too,But look at your steer tire "rating",pretty sure each tire is "rated for 6150lbs,,,(so your max on your steer is 12,300)

Ask for 16 ply steers they have a 7000lb rating, now you will be ok as long as your under gross, sounds silly but its true,we(CFI/Conway) had the same problems a few years back with a new buy of T-2's with 15 liter cats,we couldnt get legal on steers, each and every one of them they switched to 16 ply and now you were within the specs of the tires

(All steer axles have a 20,000 rating)
