Since I didn't get much of a response to my request for pictures of specifically-named parts, I thought I'd try it the other way around.
Below are the images I've taken of parts on my truck. These are parts that I am not 100% sure of the names. I do look at them during pre-trips for any obvious red flags, but it sure would be nice to know what I'm looking at. If you can name any of the parts circled in the pictures, please give the picture number and the circle color along with your answer. Thanks!!

1: Radiator support. Mostly a collision safety thing.
2: Red is a CAC intake tube (boost air) to the CAC from the turbo, Teal is the intake tubing from the air cleaner. Yellow, there, I think is the ECU -- I'm not 100% ON THAT engine. Green is some wiring harnesses, probably engine, all neat and tidy.
3: Red is a pitman arm, yellow is the drag link.
4: I can't tell if you were circling the slack adjuster or the brake camshaft. The bit attached to the chamber is the slack, which is splined to the camshaft.
5: Blue is more intake tubing, boost air, goes off to the CAC. Red to the left, is the exhaust downpipe, yellow circled the v-clamp for it. You have the exhaust (turbine) and intake (compressor) sides of the turbo circled. I think purple there would be the VGT controls and the oil feed for the turbo, sorry, don't work on Cummins enough.
6: Red is either the pushrod for the brake can or the slack adjuster. Teal is the axle, yellow a shock, green the u-bolts and spring top saddle, and blue the spring itself. Leaf springs, of course.
7: A/C compressor. The two wire connector on the harness fed to the front of it is for the A/C clutch.
8: Yellow is the height control arm, mounted on the height control valve for the air ride. Red is the height control rod.
9: Pivot spring. Holds the shoes against the anchor pin. The opposite side has a return spring that holds the shoes together against the s-cam.
10: Yellow is the brake spider, housing the brake camshaft -- your brake cam bushing is in there, hence the grease fitting. Red is the torque arm. Green looks like the leaf spring there.
11: Red is the pin that keeps the saddle pin for the fifth wheel from coming out. Yellow is actually the adjuster -- I assume it's a No-Slack fifth wheel by the looks of it.
Any more q's, feel free to ask. I'm a mechanic, just hang out to read here mostly. Glad to contribute.Everett and highflight1985 Thank this. -
thanks i enjoyed that thanks

Holy crap! Thanks! I did not expect to get every one of them named in one post. That's awesome.
Quite honestly, I'm attempting to improve my pre-trip skills. I'm a trainer and I feel I ought to be able to name these parts if asked. If I don't know what I'm looking at or what I'm looking for, how can I teach it?
I do have more questions. Can you, in any of these pictures, see any of the following?
Water Pump
"S Pipe" and "Flex Pipe"
Air Compressor (not A/C, but for the air brakes, etc)
"Gear Box" (something to do with steering)
"HUB Seal"
"Torsion Bar"
Thanks again! -
Do not see water pump, air compressor, or torsion bar from the pics...but I'm not familiar with cummins at all.
Hub Seal will be a hard one to get a good pic. It will be inside the hub. In my opinion a trailer is the best way to get a pic of a wheel seal.
Pic 3 the steering box is what the pitman arm is attached to.
Pics 5 and 6 you can see an "S" pipe...the beginning on the back of the turbine housing and the other end popping out from the bottom of the frame in pic 6.
Neat thread though. Most do not pre and post trip as they sould. I just turn wrenches I don't drive. My hats off to you for what you are doing! You will also gain a great deal of knowledge for repairs by doing what your doing!

did you go to a truck driving school? They should have showed you all of these things.
American Trucker -
pic 2, yellow is crankcase filter housing, make sure they are changing this filter on a regular basis, I think the interval is 50-60k miles
pic 5, purple is vgt controller and coolant feed for turbo and vgt.
pic 3 is the gearbox for steering, the pitman arm is splined onto the output shaft of the gear box
your waterpump will be directly below the a/c compressor mounted to the front of the engine on that cummins -
It's good you asked but you've been driving for a year!!
-
I did. They didn't.

They ended up being a fly-by-night group. Contracted through a community college. I was able to attend for free (normal fee was $4,000) thanks to veterans benefits. They've since gone out of business.
As for driving for a year, it's true. I have always checked for anything obvious (cracks, parts laying on the ground, broken wires), but now that just won't do. It's time to not only make up for what I should have learned at school but also learn the subtleties of it all. Time to ask why and how. -
