I was reading it as he had immediately hit the wreckage which would have meant he was driving at a higher rate of speed than he could reasonably accommodate for in an emergency situation.

we dont need laws to protect us, its not the phones. I see people going down the highway everyday reading the newspaper/magazines/books all while driving.....People are stupid! No law can fix stupid. This girl clearly wasnt very smart

Following that line of thinking, we'd all have to drive 35mph at night. If he was close enough to hit her immediately, he would have already moved over into the left lane to pass the slower truck and the wreckage would have been flung out in front of him.

Besides, this was on a hill steep enough to slow a loaded truck down to 15mph. I doubt he was going anywhere near the speed limit.

Depends on the weight of the 15mph truck, as well as whether or not the 2nd truck was loaded or not. I've pulled hills where I was flying up them as other trucks were crawling, and vice versa.

So we should ban phone use becouse of stuff like this? Is it going to make use safe then? Geting rid of cell phones will prevent all accidents like this in the future? Becouse this was a case of not being obserbant enough.

I dont think thats going far enough to prevent future accidents like this. Radios also provide distractions, You could be listening to a good tune or an indepth talk show and totally miss that vehicle in front of you. So radio's should be gone too. Same with heaters/AC/Fans basicaly any switch, button, gauge or dial, those should all be gotten rid of. You could be looking down adusting the tempurture in your vehicle them WHAM, your dead. We should also gid rid of manual transmissions that is also a distraction.

Passangers should also be banned from vehicles as they can and have distracted drivers and caused fatal accidents. Scenary is also a distraction. We should remove all scenary withen eye sight of every roadway. We dont want people looking outside at somthing then BAM they are dead. I mean really this is just to protect the people.

Of course if we remove all stimulants we do run the risk of drowsyness. So we should probly remove people, of course vehicles cannot operate themselfs so we should also remove the vehicles too, Then accidents like this could never happen.

Of course That obviously is not a solution as it does not solve the problem it just takes the problem away.

Instead I think we should find the problem of this accident. Lets take a phone and put it in a car and see if the phone causes the accident. Then lets take a vehicly challanged and put it in a car and see if the vehicly challanged causes an accident. I think the results of the test will show that the phone and the car alone do not cause accidents. But you put a vehcily challanged in there and the results are accidents.

So our options are to remove vehicles or remove vehicly challanged to prevent accidents like this in the future.

Right now we pretty much let anyone drive. Which is nice and all, But we have to accept they will cause accidents. We cannot baby proof the intire world.

Actually, if you know how to drive a manual transmission, it is not a distraction at all. If anything, it keeps you more engaged in your driving since you've got to pay attention to what the vehicle is doing in order to shift at the proper time to keep the engine within it's optimal operating range.

imo automatics shouldnt be in trucks!!! if you cant shift then you shouldnt be driving...i know, i know, thats the only method some of you have been taught, so thats not your fault...but automatics are putting just anybody behind the wheel!!!! i disagree with them.....like bulldog says,a manual keeps you more involved in driving...i have driven an automatic and hated it....gimme and 18 speed and i am in my glory, 2nd choice 15, 3rd choice a 13.....we had an 18 in our truck and an 18 in the pete on my page....say NO to automatics....LOL i know this was kind of off topic.....

as for cell phones....we used to survive without them....

That's a tough issue. The only thing I've been able to come up with is using the phone's built in gps to detect speed and over a certain speed, i.e. vehicle speed, it disables certain functions. Queues texts for later reading, detects whether a hands free device is connected and if not, dumps calls to voice mail and prevents outgoing calls, etc. But all that would have to be built into each device. That would require regulations.

I hate to suggest more regulations, but not all of them are bad. Safety features built into vehicles like air bags and crumple zones, for example. That simply had to be regulated in. Hopefully, if they do pass such regulations for communications devices, they'll address the problem properly and avoid a massive, hysterical overreaction.

when the rule is in the process of being created, there is always seems to be a exemption clause for law enforcement, fire ems to be included.
