Beautiful pic MedicineMan.
I love the area but it's been a spooky ride from time to time. My girls dad lived in Reno so it was an every other weekend trip for me. Heck I'd get as far as Auburn sometimes and if it looked to wicked I'd stay put for a while, then sneak over when things looked better. -
Yes, that train runs all winter. It is great to see the snowplow train out there on the tracks clearing them when the snow gets really bad. Part of the tracks are actually in enclosed snowsheds at the very top of the summit. I would love to take that train.

It's California, they put the chains on when the snow is three days out. Then you run them from Sac to Fernley, NV. LOL. Did you notice the ruts in the concrete ? Thats from running chains without the snow present as they often make you do.
Donner is a scenic drive but the road sucks until you get into NV.
Nice pics ! -
Donner Pass I-80 is beautiful. But I don't run west in winter! If I need chains to keep driving ,IT's TIME FOR BED!!!For us easterners, we have to tackle
"THE JACOBS LADDER" on I-90 (MASS TPKE) it's almost 1300 feet. -

Having spent 10 years in Reno while my best friend lived in Sacramento, I made that drive quite often. Beautiful drive in the snow or sunshine.
I left Sacramento on a late May afternoon with temps in the upper 80's and the t-tops off of my corvette, so naturally, when I got to the top of the pass it was snowing on me.
