I am beginning training with a smallish company next week (130 trucks). I am hoping that is small enough to have a driver friendly atmosphere while being large enough to weather tough economic times.

Looks as if those companies mentioned above wont be giving new drivers a chance as my school had posted. However I believe I have narrowed down my list to a few companies:May, Watkins Shepard, Con-Way, Gordon, Central Refrigerated, and Roehl. Driving a flatbed sounds fun but not sure if that is a good place to start for a beginner. Ill need to narrow this list greatly in the next few weeks

I should have asked how on earth Roehl would get me up to Wisconsin because that would be a hell of a bus trip.

told my boss the other day I was going to have to find a new job after seeing him vacuum the break room.....
He comes out and chats with you like he's one of the crew. -
BTW... what do you do when they send you , in the truck, from NV to WI? Same trip via bus or truck... -
Ive worked with small and big and back to big...small always seems to lose in the end. the last company i worked for was small and they sold out to a big company. which hasnt been horrible but interesting. they try to act small but it aint working. I suggest find a big one near your house and roll with it....
Zoltan1a Thanks this. -

One thing I can say for medium or larger companies:
They have night dispatch. When I needed my fuel card open, or money added for lumpers at 2am, someone was there to answer the phone.
Same way with road breakdown calls.

I worked for UPS for 5 years as a seasonal driver. With that exception, as a company driver, the biggest I worked for had 75 trucks.
Smaller is better...need time off? Much easier. Break something? more understanding... you are not a number but a real person.
When my son was three years old, and in the hospital, my wife's Teamster Health and Welfare medical insurance was lax on approving treatments for him. The owner of the company i drove for told me to send him the bills and he would pay them... I had just started working there and wasn't eligible for the insurance at that time. You won't get that from Jerry Moyes....
Heck... one of my former bosses even bailed me out of the Pensacola hoosegow after I got drunk with an Elvis Presley impersonator and got tossed in the clink! Great story... maybe I'll share it sometime but only after the statute of limitations has passed! He even flew the safety director down to FL to personally escort me home!Zoltan1a Thanks this.
