My company-side FM tried to get me to stay with the offer of a full-sized Condo. Its who ya know.

OTOH, you get a 5-cpm boost for the smaller truck, and access to more loads. What's more important? Sitting around in a full-sized condo waiting for a load you can scale, or getting down the road? You don't get paid if the wheels aren't turning.

If you can find out how to get a full sized truck let me know LOL. I tried, went through leasing, went through my FM, etc. answer was, your company, your in a light weight unless you train or go lease. PERIOD. Im 6'3" and 240 lbs so you think they would have some pitty on me lol.
That said, I have modified the LW to suit me, pax seat came out, micro is strapped under the tv box, refrig and storage cabinet is where the pax seat was, I also have extra storage under the bunk. It is not as bad as I thought. The benefit is the extra .05 cents per mile and I can haul heavier loads without worrying to much about exceeding my axles. I still scale anything over 33k though.

I got lucky to begin with, thats pretty much all they had. Only 2 people out of my training class got the lightweights. A year later when it was time to turn that truck in, I just told them I would take anything with 10 tires and 2 fuel tanks. You need drivers? You want me to be one? Then give me a full size truck. In about another year I'll tell them the same thing. If they want me to stay, they'll give me another full size truck. If not I'll go peacefully.

Its just personal preference. I'd rather have the extra space, extra tires, and extra fuel tank. I'm passing up 5 cents per mile, but its not that big of a deal, I certainly drive enough extra miles to make up for it. A 2500 mile week for a lightweight is the same as a 2847 mile week for me money wise. I'd rather have the extra work instead of sitting around.

And there is no sitting around simply because I have a full sized truck. Doesn't happen. In fact, it almost seems like exactly the opposite. I have several drivers that I talk to regularly, all of whom are in lightweights. They tend to sit more, drive less miles, and get shorter runs. Maybe its because I'm the cheaper option, or maybe its just my FM, I really don't know. But thats the way it is.

As for how to get a full size? Obviously you can ask, but chances are you'll probably get whats available at the time. But once you get past the initial truck, or maybe the first year in the initial truck, my guess is it probably depends on how good you are. How valuable are you to your FM? Can you be counted on, are you always on time, always willing to help when asked, etc.? If you are valuable enough, my guess is they will try to get you in the truck you want.
