Truck driver charged in 485 accident; 10 injured

A truck driver told Eyewitness News he took his eyes off the road moments before he caused a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 485 Saturday, sending 10 people to the hospital.
There was nothing but twisted metal, broken glass and crushed cars along I-485 at the Moores Chapel Road exit Saturday afternoon.
Kevin Walker admitted he's the reason so many people suffered serious injuries. Police charged Walker with reckless driving.
"Traffic was at a dead stop. I had nowhere to go," he said.
Dozens of firefighters, paramedics, and troopers were on scene, trying to extract people from three crushed cars. 10 people were rushed to area hospitals.
Troopers said late Saturday night that everyone is expected to survive. They said the car Walker hit first had a 9-month-old baby in the backseat.
"I more or less drove over the top of them, and there was a baby trapped in that car," Walker said. "That was my biggest concern at the time, making sure that kid was OK."
Walker said the baby's mother was crying, and he didn't know what to do.

"She was hollering, 'My baby my baby, my baby,'" Walker said.
Troopers said traffic was at a standstill because of the backup getting to the Whitewater Center, which was packed for St. Patrick's Day activities.
Authorities said Walker was going about 65 mph when he hit the three cars.
"How come you didn't see them if they were stopped?" asked Eyewitness News.
"I glanced down and looked back up and they were stopped," he replied. "I had nowhere to go. I tried to veer left but it didn't do no good."
Walker said he looked down to find his cell phone, which was ringing.
Walker works for ATC Transport, a company based out of Laredo, Texas. Their website said they have about 90 drivers nationwide.
Walker says he's only been employed with the company since December.
"My career is over dude, I guarantee it," he said.

Been driving since December, "My career is over dude", more like his life-style as he knew it is over. He's more than likely going to get free room and board for a while at the vertical bar hotel.

I'm starting to think they need to stop with the CDL mills. If there's also "grant money" funds being provided to the mega-fleets for hiring graduates, that needs to stop too. I'd hazard a guess that if that $$$ faucet was shutoff, it would certainly deter them from hiring just anyone that is walking and breathing.

He talked too much. His co. is gonna crucify him and so are those peoples attorneys. you get in an accident you shut your mouth name address and phone number never discuss anything with anybody except police and only what you have to. I'm all for owning up to your mistake but, but this is too much info.

Walker says he's only been employed with the company since December.

He did not say he was new to driving. Read it again before you assume he is a rookie.

I agree with Eaton18, it's getting very annoying out here with alot of the drivers these large and midsize carriers decide are qualified to be in a truck. It's all driven by money, he is right about the carriers and schools recieving grants and payouts to play that game and the companies are all for it because they get these poeple so cheap and that is more important then quality and expierience. They figure with qualcoms and satllite tracking they can drive the truck from the office and they just need somone to hold the wheel, too bad they can't hit the brakes for them from the desk or teach some of these drivers manners, how nice would that be.

This driver was on the news after the accident and look and the grammer he used, that just made all of us look nice and professional now didn't it. I know there are alot of drivers that make the effort everyday to be better then that and i respect all of the fellow drivers who do that but it dosn't matter it these schools and mega carriers are going to countinue to let poeple in the door that shouldn't be.

Xactly...This will CONVINCE anyone that watches why you NEVER talk to the police, even when innocent...

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wXkI4t7nuc[/ame]

It's a cop and lawyer telling you why you NEVER talk!!!!...If this doesn't convince you, nothing will...
