I trained about 18 drivers during my six years on the road..not as many as some but more than some others.

I may come across as tough, rude or an ###, but there is a very strong point to being that way.

Some trainees would get on the truck with know it all attitudes, some would get on the truck and admit right off they didn't have a clue. In either case it is important to establish as a trainer you were in charge and were going to teach them what they needed to know..and it is your way (same way as the company) or no way at all, and what a trainer says on the truck goes..period.

They got the point...never one was I questioned on cb usage or lack of allowing them to talk on it..never once was I questioned on cell phone usage, and never once did I use their log books as another 70. I never had a complaint from a trainee to the company or to myself. I was a tough SOB to get past but I knew if they made it that month to my satisfaction that they would more than likely be fine on the road on their own.

I never trained a lady driver but was not against it..and yes, they would have been treated exactly the same...

They always had chances to shower, daily..may not have always been at the same time every day, but they had their chance to. They got their truck stop rewards cards and fueled the truck to get their showers built up on their on duty time. They #### sure knew how to log and they could #### sure back a truck when I was through with em. I never yelled, but if they were getting frustrated I wouldn't hesitate to take em out of the driver seat and park their butts in the right seat till they calmed down.

    1. Don't worry about waking me up. Ain't no way in heck I'll be "teaming" with a rookie. Any time you spend behind the wheel will be with me in the right seat

    2. I don't give a hoot what you were in your "other life". If you was all that wunnerful at it, you would be still doing it wouldn't you? Besides, being the Champion Paperclip Chain-maker ain't gonna get the job done here.

    3. Anybody wants to leave and look for their Mommy is welcome to do so at any time. Won't hurt my feelings one tiny bit. Shoot, I might even slow down before you jump.

My trainers never had to tell me what I can do and can't do, my parents raised me better than that. It was their truck, their stuff, and I was just there to learn enough to get out on my own. Hearing what some of these trainees think they're entitled to makes me sick.

Well after all some think they are TRAINERS:biggrin_25524: and some have overly HIGH entitlements , while others are mentors and just ask for the basics in return for teaching you the right & proper way to do things .

Agreed partly but some of the things you had the common sense to know others have to be repeatedly told not to do over and over and over....it makes a trainer lose respect for a trainee very fast.

One thing you guys need to do real bad though...... Learn to realize when someone's yanking your collective chain.:biggrin_2559:

That said, there are a couple of real things in there..... up to you to figure out which is which.:biggrin_25522:

I have 1 week of training behind me. My trainer is tough. I hope I make it. The company told me I'd train for 4 weeks and safety was the most important. My trainer told me I'll only train for 3 weeks and safety doesn't get miles. He said only 30% of his trainees make it. He acts like I should know everything. I don't know ****. Sometimes he's nice and sometimes he's mean. He's definitely tough to please. He must trust me, because he took a 2 hour nap my 4th day out.
He makes me drive too agressive. I told him I don't feel comfortable driving that way and he said that's how trucking is with electronic logs. He gets p***** if I let off the fuel. I was going 70 mph in a 55 and lifted off the fuel and he got very angry. When I think I'm doing something right he still gets mad. I don't want to ask for another trainer. I only have 2 weeks of training left.
In my opinion, he shouldn't be a trainer because he expects to get his 3200+ miles per week while training. He always rushes me and I'm pretty sure it's because he wants his miles. I don't think a trainer should expect those kind of miles when training a rookie!

Yeah screw that 70 in a 55...thats your ticket not your trainers....a strike on your record....id call safety on him for that alone. I can put up with a dick but forget that. Also why do trainers think they have to be dicks...you can be firm but dont be disrespectful
