Fireman0053, but he is right, All said and done, but you should have checked the brakes, during a pre-trip insp. When someone reminds you of something like this, it will stick with you, and keep you aware of this everytime you jump up in the truck. Dont take it as a bad coment, but a lesson learned. When I was assigned my truck, I took it around back to the shop, had the mechanic adjust all the brakes, I would do this maybe once every month. No way am I crawling under there every day. I knew my truck, and had Millions of DOT checks and Never brakes out of adjustment. Did I say Millions? Sorry, Mannnnnny DOT insp.

Would the school have actually fixed it HAD he pointed it out? Doubt it, maybe but doubt it. Some of you guys talk like this is a perfect world and you can snap your fingers to get something fixed. Reality is since it was an academy truck they have a schedule to keep and those two fixes would be put on the work pending list for another day.

Your profile shows that you have seven years of experience:

Any driver with that much experience should know better than to drive something with the brakes out of adjustment.

I have a CDL Learners and as far as inspections go we were taught the parts and not how to adjust anything. I now know what to look for on my last day and even how to adjust the brakes after the fact. I think we should have been taught this earlier on what to look for so I would not have got into this position of being in the hole before I even start in this career. But it is what it is and I will mark it up as a learning experience that I should have been taught before I hit the road by the school. I do have seven year experience driving on a fire engine but nothing OTR like I am doing now. I do my road test with DMV on Monday to get my official CDL-A and then I will have my say with the head instructor about this but not until after my test. Just a shame that is all I know and I paid good money to learn but not the hard way by something punitive that will follow me down the road.

The DOT guy who did the inspection said 6 CSA points and it may not even show up since it was a state vehicle. I will send an email to my recruiter before I leave for orientation about this on Monday and explain. No sense in going to orientation if they have a problem with this. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from going ...

The brakes were a 1/2 inch out of adjustment. They allow you 2 inches and the right side was 2 1/2. When we got back the guy who showed us how to adjust them said they had backed those off because the trailer was bad for grabbing and skipping to a stop when you applied. Wish I would have been taught what to look for earlier on but it happened and what can you do other then voice your a bit unhappy at all the factors that lead up to getting the points. Which in the end my happiness will probably mean nothing.

If I were in your position, I'd let a lawyer handle it. Even if you have to borrow the money to pay him.

    Fireman0053 Thanks this.

Being new I don't really understand what I even got. I know it was a safety inspection by Va. DOT and it listed what he found wrong. Had my name and the instructors name on it and was entered into a data base. Someone explain to me what it is and what the points mean. I guess they are CSA points that the Feds keep track of and who has access to them other then other state agencies?

Fireman- thanks for posting this. It is important for all students to be aware of the importance of their actions from the first time they jump in a truck. I also thought a student would be driving on the trainer or instructors license and relying on them to insure you were safe. I honestly don't see how it can affect a license you don't have but I guess it can just like a dui or other serious events. I'm surprised that the school hasn't been sued for knowingly sending students out in an unsafe vehicle, however, I like your style in going to talk to the head instructor man to man.
I would think the way you handle this will be of importance to prospective employers.

In the cdl book i have been studying it says no more than 1 inch. so if you were 2.5 out that is not safe.
