I can't really answer your question, I got my CDL in Sept of 2011 and have only drove locally, that's why I have to go out with a trainer for 140hrs. There were a few guys here that haven't had their cdl's much longer than I have but they've been OTR so they just had to do the 2 day orientation and a road test and then they get a truck and are on their own. As for your question about alcohol I've not a clue.
Going to Werner....

DG is ok. It's better than it was when I was there in 2005. At least you no longer have to unload peice by piece. Werner was my first company. I got tired of thr DG account quickly and decided to go Midwest Regional. I stayed there til I went back dedicated on the Ashley Furniture training account. I didn't go broke with them. And the benifits were ok to. I'd go back to work with them right now. However, I moved to Florida, and they offer me East Regional, and home every 3 weeks, and I want hometime sooner than that.

Well it's day 3 of being here at the Werner motel. Had my orientation on day 1 and 2. Now just sitting around with nothing to do. Called the number I was given after class yesterday to find out when I might be going out with a trainer. I was told that my SDM was off on weekends but to stay by my phone because I could get called at any moment, but I was also told if I didn't get a call to call back Monday morning to speak to my SDM. It is even illegal to buy alcohol and transport it, even though it is sealed, in a semi. Of course, that is only what I was told in class.
I have heard stories of having a key lock box on the back of the truck, so your keys are not inside.

Well it's day 4. I was told this morning I had been assigned to a trainer and that my trainer should be getting in touch with me soon. But I was told if I hadn't heard from my trainer by noon to call my SDM.

Good luck out there with Werner. They aren't a totally bad company just wasn't the right fit for me.The DG account is good training for backing. You will be getting into some tight spots.Just remember to G.O.A.L. This is especially true when you come back to the Terminal for truck assignment and have to do a road test. When the tester has you back in to a spot even if you know everything is good G.O.A.L.They push that policy real hard.
I know the recruiter told you that you would be off every weekend. What that really comes down to is that you get to go by the house for a 34hr.reset.They want you headed back to the D.C. as soon as your reset is done.
Also remember when you take your 10hr.break to be sure and wait the extra 15 min for pre-trip before going to line 3 and always do the Inspection report as soon as you finish your day of driving. Most new drivers with Werner have problems with this at first.uprrmn Thanks this. -
As far as alcohol most companies have a zero tolerance for it.They will state their policy at orientation. -
Got with my trainer on day 4 at 9pm. We left Dallas terminal and started heading north bound to Pryor,Ok. My trainer is a very nice laid back guy. We discussed a lot of stuff until about midnight and then he told me I could go to sleep, so I did. I awoke to his alarm at 5am. We were parked at a pilot in Muskogee, Ok. We cleaned up got diesel and are now sitting in Pryor, Ok getting loaded. My trainer said once were loaded I can drive from here until we make Odessa, Tx or I run out of hours. Really glad I was put with a good trainer and am excited and looking forward to the weeks to come. Everyone have a good Monday and stay dry..
Lady K Thanks this.
