Read the original post - He was considering driving almost 3 hours beyond his 14 so that he could get by the house. His 14 ended just after midnight.

i did get to watch the infrared camera system the scalehouse has set up for the brakes on all 5 axles. that was really neat to see the differences in the heat on each drum.[/QUOTE]
WTF? how many scales have this option installed?

It wouldn't surprise me if they're quite common. You can get a portable thermal camera for under $300 if you want to check your own brakes

My guess is most of them.
I had a low tire once and they caught it in Hamilton OH. Picked up a screw and it was getting low.SHC Thanks this. -
Yep, Ohio Kentucky and Tennessee have them at most the scale houses. Indiana is installing them on I94 scales right now and last I saw, CA scales had them on grapevine.

Great, I'm running up 75 from FL to Ohio tommorow, I pull a light low boy and have the brakes backed off a bit..... does this mean if they don't see some heat, I'm going around back?

It's possible, but mostly they look for roughly equal temps on the axles. If one drum is significantly cooler than the others then they know it's got issues.T-RIX Thanks this.

I read in The Trucker News a few years ago about a driver serving time in Michigan. He was hit head on by a car that crossed the median on I-94. The driver of the car fell asleep. He is now serving time for 4 counts of manslaughter. All because his log book was showing him in Fort Wayne. Ever since I read that I've changed my way of driving, it's not worth it!tinytim Thanks this.

Thankfully my forefathers didn't spend much time on "what if's". They did that is why we have a Bill of Rights!
We all make our own beds. Then somebody tries to crawl in it. To protect us from ourselves.
What if our grandparents had spent their days pondering the idea of going to war with Germany? They did and that is why it was so hard to defeat them. Had they acted sooner less of the Allied Forces would have been killed.
What if MLK had stayed home? He would be alive.
What if the earth really is flat? The drivers that are running long days for the same pay will probably drive off the edge because they are to tried to see it coming.
What if I had 3 wives? You would be going to jail once the G-Man finds out.
Ohhhhh!! The enormity of considerations to ponder. All the while remaining in one spot. Doing nothing for fear of "what if".
A man should be so lucky that he never had to cross a line in his life.
