Does anyone know if Schneider still does the training school (at no cost) and if so would you recommend it versus going to a independent trucking school? I don't mind signing a contract working for the company for a short period of time which is what I understand is usually a requirement. I also wouldn't mind long hauls as I have heard thats what you usually are stuck with. Any information will be helpful!

    Thanks

they don't. if you look for training on their website...they'll direct you to schools in your area that they accept graduates from. they provide tuition reimbursment for approved schools. it's how i found my school.

as a side note, i found out that my school works with my city/state's employment program. the city or state would pay for the cost of the training for the unemployed, laid-off, etc. you might want to check out a similar program in your own state or city if you're looking for no cost training.

Thanks for the information. That's what I thought from looking at their website. Do you think its better to go to an independent school versus a company like Swift or England that trains you? My local community college offers the truck driver training for just over $1000 however the next course doesn't start till August and I was hoping to get started sooner.

i think it might be financially safer to go with your community college.

i was in community college in order to transfer to a university. there was a lot of different financial aid package that helped me out. grants, loans, fee waivers, etc. if you go the community college route, it might not cost $1000. depends on your income, age and maybe some other factors...talk to the financial aid department in your college and see what they can do for you.

as for training through a company, i wouldn't recommend it after reading some of the stuff on here. you have to consider the "what ifs". like, "what if i fail or what if i graduate and hate the company?" by doing company's training (whether they're reputable or not), you're essentially taking out a loan with them for the training the second you sign the contracts. more than likely, that money that you owe is gonna be way more than $1000.

be careful, i'd recommend that you do some more research on the training companies on here. have a general understanding of what might happen before you commit. school or government programs might be a better way to go, afterall, you pay taxes for reason like this (employment and education). :)

Totally, there are company schools that charge in the region of $4000 and have a 50% drop out rate.

Thanks for all the input. I went to the community college today and took the placement tests and enrolled today! I have read the horror stories and decided it wasn't worth the risk. I can't wait to get started August seems so far away.

Look up Trans Tech in Charlotte, aka Charlotte Diesel Driving School. Call and ask to speak with Anthony or Lisa, 704-597-9550. 4 week course that starts every Monday. First week is classroom, second is backing in the yard and the last two weeks are on the road in the Charlotte area.

It's more than Comm College, but Schneider does accept student's from there and you'll get to meet Donna Yonish who recruits directly from the school. You'll meet about 10 different recruiters while you're there. You're welcome to PM me if you want my name for a referral to either party.
