My husband is in school At TDI this is his second week and he is stressing out, he has been doing great with backing but not so great with shifting (double clutching) but this afternoon was also his very first time doing it. He has always been a fabulous driver can drive and back up anything you can with a class E license with ease, I know he feels overwhelmed because it is such a fast track class & he is stressing because he quit his job to go to school & now he is worried he won't make it, is there anything I can do to help reassure him some? I think it's a little early to think that he won't get the shifting down but I'm not the one out there doing it either. He is also concerned about the pre-trip inspection (it's a lot to remember) any tips on how I can help him to prepare for everything. thanks in advance.

As for everything else, tell him not to worry about it, its not hard once he gets it he'll have it. These schools throw a TON of new info at you in just a few weeks. By the time he gets to the end of the school he should have it down, worst case if he feels he needs more time, just ask for more time, they might charge you a little more but they will give you more practice.

3rd week was my hell...so much thrown at us at once. Pay attention and ask questions...bout the only advise I can give ya.
Best of luck to ya.FloTheWaitress and aw82797 Thank this. -
agree with these other guys. Tell him to not stress out be patient, He isnt the only one that first drives a truck he cant double clutch, that comes with practice. There is not one driver out there that never misses a gear or has trouble shfting at times. It happens to us all at some point. What you can do for him is be supportive and try to help keep hm positive and focusing on hs future. He will get it it takes a bit to get used to it. I had to help train a rookie driver who never drove a stick shft I keep telling him not to stress and be confident in yourself. If he gets stressed tell him to go away do something else and reset his mind. as far as the pretrip that is easier than it seems once you go over it a few times.

Alot of the testing centers use automatic transmition trucks, alomost all do. Practice Practice Practice!!! If he is having trouble with those two things then when they go out to the "track" he should focus on those. Alot of schools will let you do it till you drop if there are points that are problematic. Also remind him he is new, I have been driving for over ten years. When I first started with my 1st company, I was with a trainer (he will be also where ever he goes), I sucked at shifting! Stalled the truck out all the time, missed gears, and was ready to quit. But then one day it all clicked and ive had a great career since! He will get it, comes with expirience!!!
Also alot of guys get hung up on the pre trip because they look at the truck and think in thier head " #### thats a big truck, how am I going to remember all this" here is the secret he needs to remember. He only has to do One side!!!! Once he does under the hood and his brake check/cab, he only need to go down one side then simply say " I would do the other side just as i have done this one. Would you like me to continue?" If he missed something or doesnt have enough points they will tell him to continue, otherwise he will be finished. He is over thinking it, tell him we all have been there with the jitters he will do fine!
Good Luck!aw82797 and FloTheWaitress Thank this. -
Tell him not to stress..i have never seen anyone who, on their first attempts, didn't have problems double clutching
He will get it..it is something that just takes practice to get the timing down. One thing to remember is a heavy duty trans in a truck is nowhere near the same as a car..they work on the same principle but thats it.
Its all about timing. The biggest mistake a new driver makes is trying to shift too fast..then they overcompensate and try to shift too slow. He just needs to relax and practice.

Stressing already ??
Help him learn to deal with it........ -
Thanks everyone he feels much better today, getting the hang of it now. I appreciate the help & he listened to ya'll advice and agrees & appreciates it.

He's only been driving a truck for 3 weeks ???
Tell him to relax, there are some out there that can't drive after 3 years....
He'll be fine BECAUSE he's worried about doing it right....
Worrying about it is better then being over confident IMO..

Just ran into a guy at a terminal yesterday I went to school with, he didn't get shifting down till two days before testing out, he tested out fine and is still out here.
