Was called today by rep from motor carrier division to set up audit. I haved changed my DOT # to exempt status for hire. From instate private. I did this approximately 2 months ago. Person I have spoke with wanted to know if I had made a run out of state yet. When I stated I had not they wanted to know when I will. I told them I have no idea as only go out of state as needed for a customer few times a year. DOT rep said if I dont go out of state in next 3 months I will have to put my DOT# back as instate. I have not read about this and had no knowledge of this policy can any one advise me of this rule. I have been in business many years my dot number starts with 95. Any help will be appreated.

Never heard that one before. If they bring it up again kindly ask them to cite which regulation mandates it. Sounds like they're blowing smoke, because if you haven't run interstate yet, they really don't have anything to check you on.

I wonder if they are putting this under section about active authority. Don't know the code or care to look it up right now but they are strict about "aging" authorities.
But does seem silly based on what you are talking about. Make them happy, broker a load across the state line and come back.
Not even that hard to find someone to book you load on paper only

Better yet, maybe we could help each other out. I live near Champaign and buy trailers from Lyons. If you don't get something that takes you out of state maybe I could hire you to bring me a trailer. I may be moving some in April.

Part of the new entrant program is to make sure you are compliant with interstate procedures, rules and regulations. If you don't participate, it's kind of hard to make sure you are compliant. There's an 18 month time frame, so I'm not sure why he gives you 3 months. Maybe it's the (b)?

Just get an out of state violation. I can neither confirm nor deny that, of course.
