So I have the means and the plans in place to purchase my own truck next year.

I had hoped to go straight into it with independent authority right off the bat. I will be running for a company in the next 18-20 months running reefer.

Would a guy be better off leasing to a company that first year and then going independent?

Or go all in from the start?

With the right company, leasing on is a good option. And again, at the right company you'll make more money than you likely would as a one truck show. The only difference between me and an independent is I don't pay cargo insurance. I book my own loads, no money is fronted to me for fuel, and I wait however long it takes for the checks to get in. Some guys leased here take 3% less for fuel fronted and weekly pay. I could easily step into my own authority in another year but I see no upside to that. I would never be able to take on the necessary sales and there's no way I could ever also run a brokerage on my own. There are certain upsides to that which make me money and add convenience. Bill and Lauren have these things and it makes their company competitive.

I have done the independent gig myself at first. Now I am leased on to a oil field trucking company.

I really enjoy being leased much better. But this is what works for ME, what works for you or all the other guy's on this forum may be totally different.

Starting out new, I suggest that you lease on and learn the business first, then think about going independent.

    1958Pete Thanks this.
