i want the lowest possible data plan on the phone but, i still need it regardless. what i want to get is a usb modem for a laptop. i want to use it to plug into a laptop, laptop to router, and use the router as a hotspot/router. it's supposed to be better than a mifi hotspot.

it's hard to explain, but i think i understand the concept. it basically comes down to companies not throttling certain devices. i hear they throttle 4g on mifi, but not a router hooked up to a computer that's hooked up to a usb modem.

i understand the smart phone crazy, i just don't get the Apple aspect of it. proprietary stuff, all looks the same except for the color, not to mention the itunes store...can't easily use their music on other non-apple devices. unlike a cd which works on and cd player. sure it has a nice design...but, wheere's the originality. you'll be hard pressed to find any two identical pc's...whereas, you can find a ton of people with the 32 or 64 gig iphones or other products (64, 32, 16)...now that's a fad. form over function i guess...

The smart thing to do would be to save what you can. The LAST thing you need at this point is to add bills. You don't have a guaranteed income as a OTR driver, so if you have a dry spell for a couple of weeks there goes your phone and your credit.

    Where's the originality?

    LMAO!

Apple changed the game with their products, specifically the iPhone. The only reason you may find a resemblance between apple/non-apple products, is due to every other company attempting to imitate the iPhone and every other apple product for that matter.

One of the reasons Apple is worth $500 billion and their stock hit $600/share.

Ok, you still have to pay for the actual phone rate. The phone being fancy or not does not reflect the price of the phone plams

For an otr driver, a smart phone can act as several devises at one time, saving clutter and saving $$.
My droid x has pcmiller on it...so gps...
    internet access for the laptop....
Acess to google earth/maps to scope out shipper/receivers so i can have an easy arrival..a satlite photo says lots about which driveway to use, etc..
Can be used for music, even listen to xm/sirrius...
oh yeah....it makes phone calls......as as a camera...phto trailer scrapes and send to safety instantly when you pick up a banged up trailet to cya...
But I second, be careful with you $$ as a new driver...

I was skeptical at first about getting a smart phone, but it has become one of my most used tools. As others have said, sattelite views are real handy as well as for weather and other things. I can also send in my trip info with it, so if I'm in the boonies somewhere I can still get trip on my check. I almost never use my laptop anymore. With that being said, i wouldn't get one until you've been on the road for a while and see what your available money will be. Mine costs me around $110 with the insurance and taxes.

My wife and I both have iPhone's and we don't pay 150.00...

The fact that I can surf the web until I'm blue in the face, pull up GPS, take pics and HD video and chat face to face from 1000 miles away with my two year old ensures I'll never go back to an atiquated, regular phone.

    Ignorance is bliss I suppose.
