What the heck is the 1 year contract ???

You don't need a contract to be a company driver, do you ?

 

I can understand a trucking school graduate going to this company for employment but not any seasoned driver. You have to start somewhere and all of the mega carriers will pay graduates slave labor wages anyway. Most of these guys will put their year in and run out the door as fast as they can and appreciate their next higher paying job that much more. Companies like this will only keep churning out new drivers every 6 months to a year and eventually go out of business. Having a bunch of inexperienced low waged drivers hauling cheap freight at rock bottom prices will eventually catch up with them.

 

Hey bluecrab, I used to live in White Plains and Bryantown. My stepdad is still on Oak St.. Windy Hill has been in business over 30 years, they haul plants out of FL to Target, Lowe's etc. and general freight around and paper products back to FL. Quite a few drivers( inc one I know personally) have been with them >5 years. And the contract is to "cover the cost of training you" ,but I think it probably is a way to discourage newbs who aren't serious about this career.

 

Things have changed up this way, it's getting more suburban by the day. I've seen Windy Hill trucks around for a while and like I said, it's a good place to start and there will be some who stay on but the majority will and have left for much greener pastures. Paying a driver .30 something cents per mile just doesn't cut it anymore, no matter where you live and with low wages like that, they will only get school graduates and the truly desperate to drive for them. Check out their turnover rate. I guarantee it's in the 80% range. Not a good sign for any trucking company.
I was making .35 cpm 15 years ago. I am now making .47 cpm and that's still not enough, lol. If you're happy there and don't mind the low wages, then more power to you, but you're only selling yourself short.

 

Sorry to bump this old thread but I am going to a College CDL school in Feb. I am looking at companies now to see what I like, Windy Hills being one as I live in Jacksonville FL. Making "Big" money from the start is NOT important to me as much as getting my experience.
My only concern is what type of hands-on is there?
I have a Small Lower back issue that only shows up if I am lifting loads constantly. I prefer... I guess you all call it "Drop and Hook"? Of course I know I will be required to probably chain the tires in snow or other miner things, but where does the labor intensive aspect fall into play with various carriers?

Sillan check Roehl transport, pretty decent company hires out of florida. Started in may solo in june now makeing .36 cpm they do a performance based pay thing now so you can climb the pay scale way faster. Nice trucks for the most part some beaters left in the fleet though not many. PM me if you got any Q's, oh out 11 days home for 3 and they stick too it well sometimes you might push 14 but no longer than that.

 

I was told Monday (yesterday), by 2 different recruiters, that they are not hiring out of FL at all . I wanted to get with them as well

 

Any updates on Windy Hill? I am located in Jacksonville and I graduate from National Training in two weeks.

 

Call up the Eustis terminal and talk to Donna. As far as I know they only hire students from certain driving schools and I don't remember "National" being on the list.

You'll do paper work in Eustis and go out with a trainer, they'll get you up to Marshfield WI for the actual orientation.

Hopefully you don't have to sign that stupid 1 year contract anymore and it looks like they're pay is still low, "up to .32 cents per mile" ..

By the way you'll be up north a lot, hopefully you don't mind that

They ran my background and MVR yesterday and I'm good to go. I also checked out their safety rating on the FMCSA website and it looked good too. I have been communicating with Donnie ( WH Recruiter)...he seems like a nice guy. A couple of my trainers at National Training recommended them as a good company.
