it sounds like an owner operator could make quite a bit more. 2400 per week sounds good not even owning the truck. Also what i'm gathering is car hauling is more of a niche buiness. I'm asumeing it will be hard to break into because of that. it almost seems it would be tied down pretty good for that pay.
now the flat bedding if i'm hearing you right pays more?

 

my view on car hauling is this:
treat customer car like your own
drive friendly like all car haulers do even the fact they will lift their hand at you is a signature of a car hauler wave back
and go for it if you got the guts, and try not to return cars without roofs not all customers appreciate convertibles

 

yea, i just wanna see what everybody's hearing on pay. i'd hate to get in and have it not be really as great as i heard. anybody know for sure?

 

been trucking 19 years and the last five hauling cars as a company driver. First year made over 75000 and had 4 months of layoffs(union job) when the freight was slow. Last four years have not made under 100000/year. But you have to be willing to work for it. Want more $$$$$$ work more. As a company driver you should be able to make 300.00 a day in under 10 hours. I mainly do local work, but have friends who work for otr car hauling companies as company drivers and are making 3000.00 gross a week.

 

thanks weaslly, love what i'm hearing, any possiblity you heard drivers bringing 200k net home per yr? i keep hearing of guys pulling BIG money hualing cars, dose that sound right to you? any of your friends hauling otr on this forum? i shure would like to ask em what to be aware of before jumping into the car hauling otr life.

 

well they have to haul overweight, overheight, and overlength. They run around most scales to avoid hassels. Its not like this every load but alot of them do this for the extra money for an extra car. One more car can make a BIG difference. 78000 gross weight and under 13'6" to 85000 and 14' high. But this can mean a few extra grand to the truck. But you don't have to do this if you don't want to. They are not forced to they just do it. One extra car per load on short runs(load unload inthe same city) can mean an extra few grand a week.

Since I haul enclosed, I am always 13'6" high. The heaviest I have ever been is around 81500. Even as a company driver, I am responsible for overweight tickets so I usually won't run heavy unless I am running off a short load where I don't have to cross a scale. My company is good at building legal loads. You will be told in advance if a load is heavy and given the option to run full or leave off a car. Obviously if you run with an empty spot you will make less money unless you have a suv on board. In that case you make actually make more than if you were to go out full. Especially if you aren't going very far with the load. This isn't the case with all companies but here we get $50 for empty holes if you have suvs on board.

 

I was very interested in this so I looked them up. Everything looks GREAT, except there home time is miserable. Guess I will forget car hauling they all seem to be like that.
I must be getting old and fussy or something. I just have no desire to do otr anymore. I like out and backs. I'll go 5 days but then I want a few days off not just a few hours

I run on a slipseat board so I'm home every night.
We are union so all benifits are paid for But it's not the job it used to be.
