What he was adjusting with the knob was the initial SWR meter calibration, but he thought he was correcting the actual SWR. As others have said that can only be done my making adjustments to the antenna itself (or using an antenna tuner which is unlikely for somebody starting out).
And just for his further education, the RF gain has no bearing on SWR. -
Yep we all make mistakes starting out ...
As fpr tuners IF you are using a antenna over a wide range such as a a-99 is used by hams then a tuner makes sence otherwise not much use for CB .....
LIKE TUNING A ANTENNA WITH COAX you are not realy tuning the antenna only tricking the radio into thinking it has a good match ....
Ballanced feed antennas like the G5RV use the feed line as PART of the antenna ..... so called OCF ( OFF CENTER FEED ) do this too AGAIN if your tring to cover DC to DAYLIGHT with one antenna it will work but NOT as well as one cut for the frequency you want to use ...
The 40 meter dipole ( 66 foot long ) in photos replaced my G5RV and worked wel untill I got a R7 ...Attached Files:
Loner Thanks this. -

Someone suggested a 5.5 Francis. If you have the height clearance on your mount, spend the $25 and most of your problems will go away. I run the same radio, and 5.5' is a world of difference from a 4 ft. without getting all technical.
nascarchuck Thanks this. -
OK, first off thanks for all of the help!
My antenna has the adjustment on the top and I made a slight adjustment. SWR meter on the radio shows it to be good. I havent done a "radio check" though to test it.
One other question. Should the ANT light flicker or come on at all while transmitting? Mine is a "slow" flicker. -
Noooooo....That's your SWR "WARNING" light! It comes on or flickers when there is a problem...nascarchuck Thanks this.
-
No the ANT light should not come on unless there is a problem. But I did have a Cobra 29LTD where the light was out of adjustment. Re-check your SWR.nascarchuck Thanks this.

The bickering needs to stop. Please use the forum ignore function if necessary.

Who's bickering?
Seems like a normal conversation to me. -
Yeah, that's why I deleted 13 posts in here. Normal conversation.
