Works great to clear up your plastic headlight lens too.

Firsts of all gelcoat is nothing like Imron.

Imron is a two stage base/clear system as are many others. The problem you have with the hood (and the roof, too...or you will) is UV breakdown of the paint. The only thing that will bring back the shine is fresh paint.

My '95 has the factory Imron and still looks very good... but some colors like red, blue and silver are more prone to fading. This has been pretty much eliminated with newer paints... including Imron.

Thank you for the clarification. I didn't know that imron was a topcoat with a clear stage.

I still think I can make the hood shine. I don't think it has been compromised yet, and I am betting it'll shine with the proper materials. Its been raining here for the last few days so I haven't tried the clay bar yet, nor the new variable speed buffer... woo, I'm so excited to try that new power tool!

The clay bar helped, but it wasn't until I busted out the variable speed buffer and some rubbing compound that I had success. It was about to rain so I hurried up and got some wax on it. A more thorough wax job when the temp is a little higher outside will finish things up leaving it as glossy as a mirror.

Thankfully it wasn't too far gone to save.

You'll have to snap some before and after pictures of a portion that you did.

No, Imron is nothing like gelcoat...they are two totally different things....but the point I was making was that the reason that any paint...gel...or whatever gets dull is because its finish gets rough. Its not slick anymore...so light will not reflect off of it. With any paint...gel...whatever gets dull...if you can smooth it back out....without going through it will become shiney again. This was about the process of smoothing out paint in order make it shine again. I have done trucks, cars, headlights, boats....all are a little different...just like headlights...smooth them out...then they are clear and shiney again. Didn't mean to make people think imron and gelcoat are the same....they are not...the process of making a finish shine again...is though.

Taking the rough out and getting it smooth again. Thats all you are doing. Like putting wax on a dull floor...it smooths it out...so light will reflect off it. If you keep this in mind when restoring a finish...it makes it all make sense. Smooth/slick=shiney Rough=dull

Like the old Nufinsh commercial..or turtle wax...put the bottle on the hood...it doesn't move....then you wax it and it slides off...you smoothed it with wax.
