This is a term that nobody seems to know anymore. So let's clue y'all in.

Dogtacking basically means the back of your trailer is running off-center to your tractor; the trailer tires are not running in the same tracks as your tractor tandems. This is a problem and is usually caused by trouble in your trailer suspension; possible broken centerbolt in the springs or a broken or loose track arm. It's no joke and something to take seriously so don't just shrug if somebody hollers on the CB and says "Hey ------, that trailer's dogtracking a good foot to the right".

Could even be a broken trailer frame. Get it checked asap.

If you're wondering where the term comes from, watch a dog trotting away from you. His butt is offline with his front shoulders.

Kittyfoot it could also simply mean the tandems aren't aligned.

Every trailer axle has a fixed length torque arm holding it in position on one side and and adjustible one holding the opposite side.

A plumb bob is dropped fromthe kingpin to show the front center and the adjustment is moved until the measurement from this front center point to the end of each axle is the same.

A trailer running doggie wears tires funny.

Tractor tandems also should be checked for alignment. I had one that ate up steer tires in 75 - 80K until we had an three axle alignment.

Thing is, they WERE aligned at some point, and the only thing that will change that alignment is when something becomes damaged or worn to the point of being dangerous.

I take all new equipment TRACTOR or TRAILER in for a proper axle alignment , learnt not to put any faith in what comes from the factory.
