i have started a group board for trainers helping trainers

My farmboy driving is not exactly beneficial for training would have to retrain myself to double clutch, not drive like an @-hole, that my good man would require a man with much more patience ( go figure not driving a year legally, happily admitting I am not up to training )

 

I think this is a good idea. I haven't been a trainer yet and in the past had been asked to. Guess after a few months under my belt again I will think about it.

 

As a trainer I think it is very important to teach students money management skills while away from home. Let's start there.I teach all my students the skills that will make them successful out here. what's the need to make money if you don't properly know how to manage it.

 

I have been a trainer a little over 10 years now. They will only practice money management while they are with you, as soon as they can, they will go back to wasting money if that is their inclination. Better to teach them good driving habits, taking care of the truck and trailer, and good trip planning. And let them practice backing every day you can.

 

Are you training them,

or raising them ?

I would think that just the driving part would be a full time job.

Kind of late to be teaching them life skills.......

 

If done properly and sensible banter is encouraged, it could help the trainer side of things. I suspect that with many trainers, many things are taken for granted. And that many teaching opportunities go un-addressed, either by choice and not caring, or simply not seeing/realizing it.

But if a trainer is not training for the right reasons, all the support in the world is not going to help them become better. Perhaps part of such a forum would be focused on determining if a particular driver is even suited to training in the first place. Training only for an additional $300 a month is not enough reason to train and is only going to lead to more poorly trained drivers entering the field. If they don't truly care for the results they produce and sign off on, they REALLY should not be training. This is not indictment on them or their skills, it is merely a fact that should be realized and accepted. I'm a very good truck driver but I'll be the first to admit I have no business training because I do not have any real teaching skills or ability to discover how another is more apt to learn. This could be in part because I've never teamed more than maybe a grand total of 3 weeks, in 15+ years OTR and I've developed a huge sense of the "loner preference". But just because you're very talkative and social, doesn't automatically make you a good trainer, either, but I suspect it's a necessary trait and part of the equation.
