Anyone running a rooftop AC unit and how do you like it??

After looking at APU's at the truck show I came to the realization that they are WAY overpriced. I have a small flat-top sleeper and I don't need the ability to cool down a house. I'm thinking of getting a unit and a Honda genset and being done. I've found units brand new for under $500 and the Honda will run about $1800. That's a far cry from the $8-$10k these guys want for an APU

Check out the low profile Colemans. In that little sleeper one of those will freeze or boil you out. Is that a metal sleeper roof or fiber?

I have decided on the Coleman Polar Cub.
No need for a 13,500BTU unit in my midroof XT neither!
So far the Honda EU300 is working out perfectly for me.

It is a composite roof Dan.

That Coleman 9,500 btu is the one I was looking at. Even has heat !!! Looks to run $800 with the control panel.

Mine came with a rooftop A/C. However, I have to find 120VAC to use it, since the PO removed the genset for "weight reduction".

I wonder if anyone makes one that loks like the old roof tops?

Well living where I do (RV capital of the world) it should not be hard to find somewhere to install one. ARI and ICT are a short drive away, just was wondering how well they functioned. I don't even need it for heat really as I have a Webasto in the garage

I've been researching this for about a year now and there are a few things to consider...

Your avg rooftop camper style are not designed strong enough to handle the abuse, vibrations of the road. I spoke yesterday to 2 different camper places to confirm my research. I was told that your avg motor coach doesn't travel but 10-20,000 miles a yr were a semi does 5 to 6 times that.

A Coleman Roughneck is built and design to handle extreme conditions.
Everything about a Roughneck is heavier built from the lines to the compressor. Besides, it is the only unit that will carry a warranty for 2 yrs

I will be installing one on my truck in the next couple weeks because the main circuit board that controls the heat and ac on my 7.5 yr old Proheat went out a couple weeks ago, so instead of spending $480 + on a new board & labor/tax... I'm just going to go ahead and install a rooftop.

Trust me when I say my original plan was to install a low profile unit too, but why spend $500 a yr or more on something that will not have a warranty....

The Roughneck has 13,500 btu... My Proheat had 10,000 and it was all it could do to keep the sleeper cool on a very hot day with the curtains drawn... so I imagine 13,500 will fit the bill on these 95+ deg days...

Do what you want, but I don't plan on wasting my money...

BTW, they are about $850 to $1000...
