Interesting observation and probably an accurate one. Yes, some trucking companies are forecasting a major problem as the "baby boomers" hang it up. Problem is, these are the companies who have managed to attract the more desirable and experienced drivers with better working environment and pay.
The mega-carriers have nothing to worry about because kids are turning 23 by the thousands every day who "chase the dream" They are geared for 90% turnover and accept it as cost of doing business.
But I think what is really at play here is patience and a cool temper, and too many under the age of 30 have not yet developed these traits, and these are critical if you're going to manage to make it to a point where you can work for a carrier who truly cares about you and your happiness if you will properly conduct yourself to their valuable customers and the general motoring public and be professional at all times, behind the wheel and on the dock. Too many young drivers don't understand the vital importance of customer relations and how important the interaction of the most prevalent and critical representative of a carriers's and it's customer's force is the driver. (with regards to customer retention in a very competitive market)
Widget Mfgr A utilizes Carrier A, and the driver's for Carrier A often displays an attitude on the Buyer A's dock, Buyer A is going to tell Widget Mfgr A to utilize another carrier or we will go to Widget Mfgr B. A bit crude of an illustration, but I think it makes my point.
This driver's opinion??? ...
#1 requirement for being a successful, happy driver: Patience
#2 requirement for being a successful, happy driver: no tendency to fly off the handle (i.e. cool temper)
#3 requirement for being a successful, happy driver: able to back well, or soon be able to back well
#4 requirement for being a successful, happy driver: the list goes on but if you can't meet the first three, than no point in continuingLast edited: Mar 30, 2012

I don't know if you could equate old to being a good driver; no to long ago, there was a rash of old people crashing through the front doors of Walmart and other super markets.
