Ups???? Good luck with that one.... I have been working my way up over at ups, to a tractor trailer division. It works like this

It is a union company, so they do not hire from the outside. I have 3 years tractor trailer driving experience, and they hire their non cdl drivers first to learn to drive their doubles and triples, before they hire someone who has 10 or 20 years of driving experience. you go to ups, your driving experience means NOTHING. In fact, if you go the ups route, plan on shelving your cdl for at least 8 - 20 years.....and I am not exaggerating those numbers. to get truck job, it works like this. You have to start out in the warhouse hub, as a part time package handler which starts you out in between 8 - 9 an hour. 25 hours a week maxium. then, if you stick through with that for at least a year or two, you can move up to a full time package handler position, which is just 2 part time positions put together...but your hours cap off at like 35 a week. after 2 long years of this, you will be making maybe 10 - 11 an hour. at this point, you can put your name on a LOOOONNNGGG list, of people waiting to get into the driver position. not tractor trailer, but the box car driver. and from what I have researched across the usa, this wait is universal....you are looking at waiting close to a total of 5 - 7 years, just to get into driving box car. that position starts around 14 - 16 an hour with annual raises. then, after being with the company for several years, and you are driving box cars, things are going well, and they like you, they allow you to put your name on ANOTHER LONG LIST of people, waiting to get into tractor trailer division, or the "FEEDER" position. That position starts right around 30 an hour, and I have talked to guys who have been feeder drivers for 20 years, and the cap out around 42 an hour. I have also talked to muiltiple feeder drivers, who said from the time they started at ups as a package handler, till the time they got into feeders it took between 10 and 22 years, depending where in the country you are. up to 22 years! the only reason anyone quits ups feeders is if they retire and thats it. ups is a life long commitment. its the first choice for the individual who does not choose college. so unless you are young, and you have the time, you might want to pass ups up. like for me, I am almost 30, and I am not looking to get back into a tractor trailer with ups till I am close to 45. good luck with that one.

 

forget that, once I get hired by the FD (hopefully soon) in 25-30 years I want to be retired, not just being able to get the feeder position.

 

One of our Mechanics has been @ UPS for 7 years, and is just now getting to "ride along" with a driver.

 

It depends on what part the country u work in and size of hub. Some smaller depots hire feeder drivers right of the street. I worked at a main hub in seattle from 95- june 98 and drove package car at redmond hub from 98-04. I had my own route from 2002-2004. Before leaving to drive tractor/trailer combos. There was a package car driver who went from redmond ctr to hub feeder in 3 yrs or so. It based on who signs up on the feeder list. And who is willing to work
Odd hrs per week. Highest person on list are picked for
Backup feeder drivers who go back in forth between ctr work and feeder. When i was a huber i worked 25 hrs a week during non summer/peak season time. During the busy season from may to jan. i would double/triple/ or quad shift about 5 days a week. At that time we got ot after 5 hrs . I know now UPS has changed some aspects of ot for hubers.

Maybe you should run for the office and become the Republican Answer which they don't have if there going to win the election in November ?
It's not the President, maybe you should look at the Democrats.
Neither party is getting anything right, it's just the Dems. are in the white house.
The republicans can't even come up with a candidate the party is happy with ? That's pretty bad...!

 

Everyone can say what they want about UPS both good and bad.

The thing that I find interesting is that not only are they a union company, but the lack of complaints is astounding. In fact, I don't see too many complaints from drivers where the teamsters are concerned.

Yet I continue to see so many complaints from those drivers that are not represented by a union?

Why is that? Why do union drivers seem so much more satisfied in their jobs compared to their non union counterparts?

 

At UPS Freight we have multiple mini hub runs where a driver works the dock for a few hours. Out of Cleveland we have Columbus, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Fort Wayne. I was hired straight as a linehaul driver at UPS Freight with no wait. We are at 65 cpm and 25 bucks an hour at full rate. Freight is the way to go, no wait time unlike parcel.

 

Since we are bringing up politics as a teamsters member I will not vote for Obama, he has done nothing but drive this country into the ground further. The last time I voted Dem was Kerry in 2004.

 

Well, I doubt very seriously if President Obama will need your vote. But without getting into a pis---- contest with you, who caught and killed Bin Laden? I guess that drove the country into the ground further. Go vote for your frigging Governor that you have in Ohio.

 

Can't polish a turd. And Obama got handed a plate of crap to begin with.
