What's up with these stores, shopping malls and grocery stores? They the public that the reason thier prices have increased is due to fuel cost. Fuel cost have risen 430% in the last twenty years. But our pay is the lowest its ever been. When fuel hit a dollar a gal. no one would move a load for less than a dollar /mile. Now its around $4.30/gal. And Brokers and shippers want us to haul loads for $.87/mile. Are we that dumb? I've been an owner operator for 31yrs now. Hot shot freight and oversize is my specialty. That $.87/mile was a hotshot load I got asked to haul this morning. 10' wide 30,000# 30' long 11' high. Our Government needs this item ASAP. I guess they still do. If you take your yearly insurance, tires, and maintenance cost and divide them buy 100000 miles it would be around $.13/mile. @ 6mpg thats $.71/mile. Now Pay yourself $.36/mile.(only $36000/yr) Thats $1.20/ mile cost. According to these brokers and shippers we're charging them too much. We don't set the rate, they do. We need to find a way to fix this problem. And soon

Speak for yourself I dont haul cheap. Cheapest load I have hauled lately was $2.44 a mile and as high as $1500 for a 301 mile and get this a $1600 from TQL for a 4 drop load all in NC picked up in southern VA tuesday done wenesday morning and went home put less than a 1000 miles in and went home with $3100. So I thank all the drivers thats hauling cheap freight that way the brokers can pay me more with out taking a loss

Mr. PlumCrazy, how are you pulling $2.44 a mile. The brokers treat me like I am robbing their bank account when I try to get a $1.50 a mile out of them. I must be missing something. :biggrin_2555:

The guy wants to rant about idiots hauling too cheap or brokers breaking people, what does it hurt anyone? You always kind of hope the truck running cheap crap reads your post. Then you realize they have to run 24/7 wondering why their equipment is worn out with nothing to show for it. ;)

500 other trucks willing to pull it for that rate, in the same area. While 500 others tell them to pound sand.

Until 1000 of them tell them to piss up a rope and pull their own freight. It will be that way.

If you're running that cheap you're either loosing money or barely breaking even. I pull a reefer and am averaging well over $2 a mile on all miles since March 1.

Been pulling the same kind of rates in a dry van in the same time frame. And this month is starting off even better, close to a $2.60 hub average so far on 1,600 miles.

We run a 53' dry van. I have to say I only have about 2 months real OJT. The brokers must be giving it to me good then.
I feel like an idiot, but I guess ignorance has it's price. I have to find someone to give me some pointers on dealing with these brokers. If I am guilty of running cheap freight I apologize to everyone here.
We have been squeezing about 10% profit above our costs but then again I am not really getting paid either. Oh well, at least I am aware of it now.
