Have him take 4 or 5 days of hometime when its "fixed". Swift rules require he turn in his truck if he takes more than 3 days hometime and get assigned another truck when he gets back.

Learn the system and you'll know how to work the system.

There are problems with that tactic.

It is usually a lot more trouble to clean out your truck and bring everything home, and then back in to a new truck - than it is to transfer all that stuff to a truck parked right next to you.

And, you never know how long you will wait to be assigned a new truck.
That 4-5 days of home time could very slowly turn into a couple weeks more.
    And, it probably will.
And all the while you will have to 'be ready to go at a moments notice'.
    Stressful.

How are you with zero income for several weeks?
At least, with a broken down truck, you will get breakdown pay.
But waiting to be re-assigned a truck?
    Zero, zilch, nada, none.

The best tactic is to simply run as many miles as you can, take breakdown pay when necessary, to get that truck to its trade-in point.

My current truck is a perfect example. I have had it for around 6 months, and it has been in the shop for at least 6 weeks of that time.
I am now stuck in Rawlins WY waiting for a load that will get me to Phoenix to trade it in, as this is where it decided to break down once again.
I gave up most of my last home time, because it HAD to be to Phoenix by this past Friday. And here I sit.
I will collect 4 days break-down pay, and if I don't get a load very soon I will start collecting layover pay.

But, I won't be sitting at home (nice as that sounds right now) making nothing waiting for a truck to become available in MN.

It was about 1/2 mile from the far eastern end of the yard. We did lose power for most of the afternoon, yet there were drivers sitting in the lounge blankly staring at the TV with no picture.
