hazmat was easy in mn and not that many hoops at all if you read the qualifications for the background you have to be a full fledged terrorist not to get one it seems.

In Texas you have to take and pass the test first. Pay the fee and then get a pass from DL office to take to the company they have contracted with for fingerprinting and BG search. Can not initiate the BG first.

Well i went to the dmv and took all three of the tests. Then i got the BG check going. Then i found a fingerprinting location in another state and did that. Pain in the ##### trying to do it while your on the road. I flunked the triples/doubles. But passed tanker and hazmat. So when i go back to get hm added on i'll retake the t/d.. then i'll be heading off to haul water : ) and screw this company i drive for. I can't stand them.

In addition to the endorsement for tankers and hazmat on your CDL you must be trained in accordance with the 49 CFR parts 100-177 §177.816 Driving training. Paragraph (a) of that section can be satisfied by the CDL endorsements but paragraph (b) must be conducted. In that requirement it will require you to be in compliance with paragraphs § 172.702 Applicability and responsibility for training and testing plus paragraph §172.704 Training requirements.
Your additional training goes much deeper into the product,truck handling, truck design, emergency situations, safety devices,OSHA and EPA,and details for your job. You are to be tested by your employer 90 days after hiring if hired after July 2 1993. If you were hired before that date it should have been completed before Oct 1 1993. That will cover the initial training then after that it's every 2 years. If you change your job scope like changing the product, testing must be done again. The paragraphs go into detail on recordkeeping and what the employer must do.

Here was my training- "if you see fire...RUN". Then hand me the keys and point out what direction the rack is in. -
Unfortunately there are a lot of companies that do just that. And somehow they get away with it. But be careful because one day if the regulators decide to inspect that type of operation they will shut it down and you'll be out of work. If I were you I'd get a copy of the 49 CFR and show your safety department or boss just what their requirements are. Just do it in a way that shows them you're working with them and not agains't them. You must be pulling for a common carrier because I know that ARCO and the other big ones are in compliance even with all the tax obligations. -
In Wyoming I took my written Hazmat test with the DMV prior to going into Hazprints to get my background going. Once my background was cleared, the DMV was notified and I went in and had the endorsement added to my license. Actually had to get a new license with it.
