I am going to be attending SAGE Truck Driving School soon, and I'm doing research for the pre-hire agreements they make you complete before starting. I will be living in the Denver, CO area, and I'm looking for a decent starter company for a driver with no experience, that will pay a livable wage. I'm not looking to be rich by any means, but at least put food on the table. I am probably looking for something regional. I want to be out on the road, but I do have a family at home as well. So far I've found four companies here that I'm considering: Schneider National, Central Refrigerated, Werner Enterprises and Waste Management. Here is a little bit on what I know so far about these companies.
Schneider National: They seem like a decent company as far as pay. I really can't find much information on them other than people are normally happy there. They offer regional out of Denver, so thats a plus.
Central Refrigerated: I really can't find much on these guys as far as pay. There is a couple threads on here for them, that seem decent, but not too much detail.
Werner Enterprises: Most reviews on this company seem to be negative, and the pay seems a little low. This could totally be a misconception by me, and if it is please correct me. This company also offers Regional out of Denver, and they have a pet policy. Not that taking the dog with me is a necessity, but a bonus.
Waste Management: Its garbage. Don't get me wrong, NO job is below me, and I've even worked once at an Animal Shelter cleaning up dog crap. Its a local job, and the reviews seem pretty good on this company, but I want to drive a semi. I'm not too thrilled about just driving a garbage truck around Denver. I want to see some open road.
So anyway, I look forward to a lot of advice with these four companies in particular. Which companies would you/wouldn't you pick if you were me?

Also look at JBS Carriers out of Greeley. They take new drivers and you go out with a trainer for a while then get your own truck. They have orientation every Monday.
-
I don't have any personal experience, but I hear a lot of guys talk more positive about paying their dues at Schneider than most of the other mega carriers.
-
Yea, I just looked them up. They seem really good, I'm going to call them tomorrow.
-
You will read allot of positives and negatives on here about JBS but they really are good to get your feet wet and get the training. I started with them but found OTR wasn't for me and left them. Then was fortunate to land this gig. JBS doesn't have regional though where as schneider does.

Hey MacGuy81. I'm glad you listed Waste Management as an option for your future career! I work there at the corporate office in the Recruiting department, and a big part of what I do is interaction with out Front Line Driver team. They offer a lot of positive feedback, and I wanted to share with you a few benefits they've mentioned to me in the past:
- We offer world class benefits including medical/dental/vision, 401(k), stock purchase plan, and much more
- The day starts early! Often around 3:00 am. But at the end of the day, you get to go home and spend time with your family and friends. This is something you don't always get in long-haul trucking
- If you have work ethic and dedication, you managers will reward you for it
- You get to be the gateway to our customers - families and businesses rely on you to provide the best service in the industry
And that's just to name a few. We'll be here to answer any questions you have about working with WM. Feel free to ask and we will get back to you!TruckerJoe-FL Thanks this. -
If you drive local for 6 months or longer and then decide to go OTR, you will (in all likelyhood) be required to go through an entire 160 hour CDL school again to qualify. The shorter refresher courses will not be accepted if you attempt to go back to OTR.

Not always true. I drove local for three years then went OTR no problem.

Early morning and home every day. Sounds good to me! I just went on their website to do the online application. They are hiring residential drivers for trash pick up in my area. They are just a few miles from my home. I hope they consider me. I have 8+ years driving experience with a clean driving and background record. I think they have tractor trailer drivers too. If so can you latter at some point switch over to a tractor trailer position within the company? -
It all depends on the company. Some count local as good experience, others only want otr experienceTruckerJoe-FL Thanks this.
