Truckers lose on speed limit hike
    10/10/07
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Truckers traveling through Illinois will continue to face a 55 mph top speed limit, after lawmakers on Wednesday failed to nudge that limit up to 65.

The Illinois House fell more than 30 votes short of forcing into law a bill that would have allowed truckers to travel at the same top speed as passenger cars, as they do in Missouri and most other states. The Legislature passed the bill this summer, but Gov. Rod Blagojevich vetoed it, calling it unsafe.

Although the House had passed the original bill 90-22, supporters trying to override Blagojevich's veto could muster only a 57-53 vote -- well short of the three-fifths majority of 71 votes that was needed.

Of course, what a surprise. I'd love to be the one to deliver a shipment of hardwood flooring to Mr. Blagovich if he were to order it. For that veto he'd get it dropped at the end of the #### driveway.

My guess is that a lot of the reps in the senate were too wussy to vote against the party.

That would be fun! Then load him up and forget him somewhere. We have split speed limits all over the place here and with all the 2 lane roads, it's a real pain!

That's ok, he would probably use Federal Highway dollars to hire someone to move it into his house.

Last week when I was headed to WI from NC .... I came thru Chicago tolls .... i had my pickup with a u-haul trailer on the back .... speed limit was 55 on the tollway .... i was running 65 and still had cars and semi's racing past me like i was standing still

It would be best if they raised that .... not that it would matter .... just means that everyone would be going faster .... but at least give the semi's a chance at safety

Where in heaven's name do they get the idea that it makes the roads SAFER to have 80,000lbs of big truck obstructing the free flow of traffic? Where are their heads?:biggrin_25516:

My guess is, as soon as 1 of those legislatures kids slams into the back of an 18-wheeler doin 145 in his Vette, you'll see the speedlimit raised

If everyone was smart enough, Owner ops and company drivers can hurt this state and others that have split speed limits. In IL, we are dealing with a governor that is completely stuck on stupid as he is too lazy to drive a car, yet alone, spending over $250,000 a week of IL taxpayers' money to fly on a lear jet from Chicago to Springfield instead of moving into the governor's mansion like everyone else. IMHO, buses should be included to do 55MPH as well, but unlike us, THEY HAVE UNIONS! When will OOIDA wake up and unionize TRUCKERS?

The way to harm IL and others is by patronizing only states with uniform speed limits and no discriminatory practices towards truckers. THIS MEANS:
    1.Do not purchase fuel
2.No patronizing of any goods, services or restaurants by these states
    3.Avoid toll roads when necessary
4.Depending on issues of "forced dispatch", residing in these nuissance states, REFUSE TO PICK UP / DELIVER LOADS TO THESE STATES!

Until this is done in a wide marginal fashion, nothing can be done until the heat is placed on Congress to make a MANDATORY FEDERAL LAW MAKING IT UNLAWFUL FOR STATES,TOWNS, INSURANCE COMPANIES, ETC TO IMPOSE SPLIT SPEED LIMITS FOR TRUCKS,ETC, OTHERWISE, THESE STATES WILL BE SANCTIONED FROM FREIGHT OR TO FIND ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE OF SENDING/RECEIVING FREIGHT!

    Sincerely,
WEREWOLF. (A FORMER ILLINOIAN AND #### PROUD OF IT!)

PS: These people have no idea that by imposing split speed limits that these states are making the truckers become a PUBLIC NUISSANCE, INVOKING ROAD RAGE AND OTHER UNSAFE DRIVING HABITS BY FOUR WHEELERS AND OTHER NON-COMMERCIAL VEHICLES!!!!
