Been reading the CDL manual. I've gotten through the "safe following distance" section. The only thing I could think of is what does the OTR driver do during rush hour in the metro areas?

From my perspective as a non-CDL, no matter what speed you are travelling, there is going to be some 4-doork that is going to see a space large enough for a SMART CAR, but he is going to put his EXPEDITION in that spot. Slowing down to allow more space is the right move, but before you know it,..the cycle begins again.

What are some ways OTR drivers maintain a safe following distance when any space you leave in front of you will be filled by a 4-doork as if it were a black-hole? Or is this just a vicious cycle and the only answer is ....... BE PATIENT!!

Running slower than the pace of traffic is an easy solution. DMV manuals think in perfect scenarios. If you're in rush hour traffic chances are you're not moving very fast and leaving a 5-7 second following distance isn't necessary. Patience is definitely a key, but keeping the concept of the rule in mind is a safe bet in many cases.

Blow the horn at them if it makes you feel better. Only if they really dive in front of you though. Normally I just back off whether it's a 4 wheeler or another truck. I've been rear ended by a bozo in another truck before and don't want that to be me.

They put themselfs there so they must like you on there ###. It depends on what to do but mostly I just drive slower than traffic, its much simpler and less speeding up and slowing down for bs.

If a four wheeler takes your gap away you have to fall back a couple of seconds. If that four wheeler slams on their brakes for any reason its your fault if you plow into them. It's hard being passive and you always see 18 wheelers driving behind cars with only a 1 second gap. In California this is really common.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like it is what it is.

Keep behind what distance you can, be patient and follow the concept of keeping a safe distance. Sounds easy....except for the patient part!!! :biggrin_25523:

scan from in front of you to 15-18 seconds (1/4 mile) out and back. Especially in traffic.

You can see a line of cars light up brake lights a long ways away unless you are around a curve or behind a hill.

There going to jump in it. There's no stopping them. Just back off to a safe following distance again. Stay calm and be patient. A lot of inconsiderate drivers out there.

The patient part isn't that hard once you realize that all the people cutting in and out aren't really getting anywhere faster than you. They're just working harder at it.

Try to keep a good gap and keep pace with a truck way ahead of you and when that truck doesn't get further away you'll realize just how little ahead all the nascar wannabes are not really getting.

MN, Dorsey, and TT. Thanks for some perspective. I think I can manage the patientence of being in traffic that can't be hurried. For all their activity, the knuckleheads won't get where they are goin much sooner than me.

I think Dorsey is on another point for me, I need to be calm about the inconsiderate drivers out there. They don't know me, they don't care they cut me off, and there will be another one of them right behind the last one very soon. No sense I should get my heart rate up and have my blood vessels bulging out of my head/my neck. I need to save all that for excercising.

    Thanks.
