I drove OTR from 4/2008-5/2009 and came off the road due to my wife's health. In 2010 I was driving a day cab with a 53ft. dry box within a 150 mile air radius and after getting the shaft in December of 2010 I have done some other work like driving concrete trucks, end dumps and dump trucks (which was the last thing I did). The job market in SEMO is pathetic and still a lot of dump trucking companies are still sitting pretty much idle. Dump trucking is alright but S**** in the winter time.
So to make a long story short.....My question is....Since I havent drove OTR in a few years, what would be some good companies to apply to so I could get back to driving OTR?

Most companies won't touch you if you have not had verifiable experience within the last three years because of insurance requirements. I was out of the game for 10 years and took a 1-day CDL refresher course at a truck driving school for $400. That got me around the insurance company so I could drive again.
As far as what company? I am sure you know to stay away from Swift, Useless Express, Pumpkin, etc. The guys I talk to that work for Stevens Express seem to be pretty happy. Their trucks are not cut back and they don't run electronic logs.

Here is a website with pro's and con's about stevens

Nothing wrong with Swift. Driving for Swift is what you make of it. If you have not been fired from any job in the last 10 years then Con-Way is a top-dog outfit there drivers seem happy to be in a Con-Way truck.
But in the end Sir its up to you to read the reviews and experiences from other drivers on this site, there is years worth of knowledge on this site just waiting for you to dig it up and find what company will work best for your needs. Dont forget speak to drivers from many different starter companys they will give you the good and badLast edited: Apr 6, 2012

Your right Aflak, its what a person makes of it. I have read too much when it comes to Swift and have talked to drivers that work for Swift and that has been enough for me to not even give them consideration. If Swift was my ONLY choice then I would probably go back to factory work or resort to crime. I appreciate your input but Swift is just not an option.
If I cant get back OTR then I will check out local sawmills in the area to see if they need a driver hauling ties, slabs or lumber. For where I live...job market is pathetic to say the least. Even driving for a sawmill or pallet mill....them jobs are hard to get also. Things around here are so bad the people hang on to the jobs like a piece of gold because it is. -
Not trying to be funny but how about moving to a better area? If the job market is that tight for drivers I would consider a move.

I got tired of hearing all the big company recruiters telling me I had to "go back to school for a refresher".
I finally told a Swift recruiter to pound sand when he promised me I'd be back before the end of the day begging for a job.
I started to work for a local company doing regional OTR stuff a month ago.
Been in my own truck now for 3 weeks. I should be at 11,000 miles for the month I have been on the road next weekend. -

you can always go over to springfield and work for Prime.
