So there have been a few loads paying descent out of crappy freight areas that required a smoke tarp. My question is, do you really need a smoke tarp if your stacks are mounted on the side of your cab??

Also, the tarp pay is good, so couldn't I just pay the truck wash $40 to spray it off before delivery??

I had to smoke tarp once when I was driving for TMC back when they had grass burners!!
Who ever pays gets to make the rules. I have found it much easier to do what I can to make the shipper/reciever happy and follow their rules... evne if they are stupid.

Some times the shipper has lots of rules to make up for the lack of common sense.

Edit: Unless you are running a grass burner, or DPF and some convincing, I'd expect a smoke tarp.

you can usually get a cheap 10x12 tarp at wal-mart or truckstops for less than $20. That's usually all you need. some twine or string to tie it on, 1" ratchet straps if you have them.

or you can get a really nice nose tarp for about $100. I know when we load insulation they won't let us load unless we got a tarp. that little tarp comes in handy for other stuff too though.

Sometimes the broker sells his service to a shipper including having the load tarped, even if it doesn't actually require it. Makes shipper think he's special...."Wow, this guy will tarp our freight for the same price". Then the load gets dispatched as a tarp load. Moral of the story: check with shipper/consignee if load actually has to be tarped. I learned this little secret after delivering "must be tarped" loads to consignees who unloaded and placed the load outside, unprotected.

Way back my family company decided to get a sweet contract hauling 6" pvc pipe that required a smoke tarp, few got lazy and never tarped. Reciever rejected one dirty load and after that anyone not having a decent tarp was not hauling anymore.

Get a decent smoke tarp and be done with it, also some quality rope to boot.

Plenty of cheap tarps, ropes and crap cover the roads everyday.

back when i was one truck show, you needed a smoke tarp for pvc pipe loads (man i hated those loads)so the smoke wouldn't get the pipe dirty from the smoke. also needed it for foamboared loads to keep the wind from blowing the foamboard off your front teir.

I agree they were a nasty load, slick and loved it when the receiver would request two bundles of 45 rather than 4.

Watching them unload that with two forklifts was the best time, it never failed they would tear the crap out of the bundles and away we go. LOL:biggrin_2559:

Receiver asked me one time, how do they get it on the trailer and not tear it up. Told them I had no clue.

Foam boards out of Winchester Virginia, one time and I mean one time.

That load gave me OCD and cussed every time I looked in the mirrors.:biggrin_25510:

I have not used a tarp since coming over here. I'll just keep it that way ;)
