working with Con Way LTL, Can i Tranfer from OTR to linehaul..

You've your info a little jumbled.

There is conway truckload and conway freight(the LTL side). And also the LTL side is where linehaul comes into play

Conway truckload has teams which they seem to keep moving. LTL side is home daily unless they run an extended lane and run teams..Wont see that anytime soon.

So if you're looking to run teams, conway truckload is the way to go. But if you eventually want to get into LTL. I would start right away as that would be one year of seniority that you'd have as opposed to going with truckload first.

All depends on what you want to do

 

LTL is working the dock and a little driving, depending on how far the closest FAC you run to is..Being in Miami i cant see it being too far from the terminal. And yes its usually solo and most of freight runs are made to be done in the 11/14 window. Some other LTL companies have layover runs.

If you want to do LTL ultimately, id say forget the OTR teaming with your cousin. LTL is seniority based, and if you wait a yr, youll be a year behind. So if thats what you want to do, then just apply for freight f.rom the get go

But yes you can transfer from conway truckload to conway freight in a year. But you will go to the bottom, as your OTR experience is just that, experience. You keep vacation time and stuff, but thats it.

 

Century, I am going to argue with you (but only a little) I think his driving OTR would be better for him in the longrun, even if he does lose a year of seniority. The reason I suggest this is due to the nature of the docks you LTL boys hit sometimes, the driving he will experience as an OTR driver will do him quite a bit of good as it will prepare him for more than dock work (I really mean no offense). Right now with CSA cracking down so hard if he can learn OTR it gives him a better experience level to draw on when/if he switches to freight.

 

That's a tough call. I have a little over 10 years total driving now and a little less than 9 years at Freight. That year and a half would have me up about 15 seniority slots at a big terminal. Had I started later, I'd be down the board further and there's no way I'd have the slot on the run I currently do.. It's a roll of the dice..

 

I know it varies by terminal, but what are you seeing for new guys in general? is there work/runs available? have just submitted my app for freight.

 

more than likely you'll go to the flex board. Unless luck is on your side and you slide into a line/p&d slot.

Youll get the shortest run, but hey as long as there is consistent work and you ca pay your bills, just do what you gotta

 

I never drove OTR, I had no desire since I got too much going on and didnt want to be away all the time. I knew some LTL companies would keep you out one night which wouldnt of bothered me. When I worked at CWF i started as an apprentice without any experience. If you want to do OTR, then its up to you, but if you dont you do not have too. This is a thread on here that someone made that tells you how to get into a local gig right away. Its best to get in with an LTL company sooner the better due to its all based on senority like century described.
