    Yeah there is nothing wrong with leaving them stock, but I like all my radios to be "Army Radios".....I want them to be "all they can be"!!! Peak and tune is a good thing if done properly.

    RTTY = radio teletype
    SSB phone = single sideband phone (phone = voice)
    USB phone = upper sideband phone

    S units are useless. Either you can communicate or you can't. End of discussion.

    So is there an actual simplex phone or a ptt rig? I know motorola had PTT phone patch on VHF back in the 80's.

    And remember the LF mobile operator ? Wasn't that operating around 30 meg with civil defense? Is that still active??

    The term 'phone' is a shorthand way of saying 'radiotelephone'. It has nothing to do with the PSTN (public switched telephone network). Voice mode radio communication is referred to as 'radiotelephone' or 'phone' for short.

    For comparison, other communication modes include but are not limited to:

    RTTY (radioteletype)
    CW (continuous wave AKA Morse code)
    ATV (Amateur television)
    Packet

    Interfacing radio to the PSTN is known as a 'phone patch'. Many Amateur repeaters have a phone patch that can be accessed via DTMF, and AT&T operated (and may still operate) an HF SSB phone patch for marine vessels that don't have sat phone capability.
