Just got my CDL A! But all companies in the area require 12+months experience.

Well lets see,you did'nt get your CDL the right way and attend school thinken all you need is a CDL,you're looking for an oil field job, speaking of which, are you willing to relocate for an oil field job? Many pay for relocation assistance. You don't want OTR may I ask why?

Gotta pay your dues. If you have no experience, no CDL school, and don't want to do OTR, then find a job driving an equipment rental delivery truck or a logging truck. The log truck might be your only option. Of course, there's always Pepsi or Coke.

Considering how many "school" drivers come out without a clue I see no problem not going through a school. You will have to search harder to find a job but atleast you will avoid the BFI companies.

Yah, you see no problem, but what view do you think a trucking company's insurance provider will say??

I'll tell you what "they view", No solid foundation to build on, NO formal training, NO tests taken to test his skills on a daily basis, etc, etc.

I "see" him NOT getting a job, at all.

This ain't the old years of say the 1940's or 1950's or 1960's or even up to the 1970's, when all one had to do is seek employment as a new driver with NO schooling and find it all that easily.

You're gonna have a tough time. The only outfits that will skirt the 'recient two years verifiable exp." are gonna be your smaller intra state companies. We are still in a recession big time and all THOSE outfits have at least half of their people laid off. The only jobs available intra-state are jobs you will not like. Facts of life my friend. Sorry. Good luck to you.

I don't understand why people think they can just 'skip' or 'pass' over what the rest of us had to do....

Many people seem to be looking for a shortcut.

Got to put the time in like the rest of us.
Some guys go OTR for just 6months and land a nice local job. Some a year.

Personally I have zero interest in doing anything local or dedicated lane.
I love the unknown of where I will be going next and yet have the freedom to be home
    when I want as well.

Not going to school is bad. It's not like the old days anymore...
I went to a horrible CDL (mill) school back in 1990.
Basically I was handed the keys and told to do what I could in the yard. I think I had maybe 5hrs (if that) of
behind the wheel. Fortunately I passed the NY State road test...sometimes I wonder how...

You'll probably have to go OTR to get the experience to get hired on to a company that does shorter runs. I'm new myself and expect a somewhat rough first year... I figure that's the dues I have to pay.

I was dreading OTR, but my first week has been busy and awesome.

I'm just doing this to "build my resume" as it were.

Agreed. Try Pepsi or Coke. You might be able to get on there running a local route.
