Well I'm just a CBer and been at it off and on for about 35 years or so. Don't know anybody that ever ran a Larsen 5/8 wave. I've run about every CB antenna out there and it is just hard to beat the good ol steel whip in my experience. Now I've consulted my expert, who can match your vast experience and then some and this is what he said......(see below) when I asked him if your antenna suggestion was better than a steel whip.
"not really. radiation launch angle is higher for 5/8 meaning ground wave around you is better in all directions with the 102. so depends on where you plan to talk. plus the 102 has higher efficiency. 5/8 better skip shooter if thats what you trying to do. these type arguments are vain. which is better car or 32 ton tank? car for cheap trip. tank if trip is inner cities today."

thanks for the welcome, if you want to count cb I have beena radio buff since I was 20 some 42 yrs ago I have been a licensed Ham since 1974 but was actually a radio experimenter long before I was 16 yrs, built my first crystal radio when I was abt 10. The Larsen ant I was speaking of has a small loading coil at the base with a steel whip and resembles many commercial ant it is not a likely subject for theft by hoodlums as it doesn't look like a cb ant and actually works very well, everyone I have advised that bought one is very happy with them and they like the 9 ft steel whip last forever. Radiation angles and gain patterns are best left for those with expensive test equip and lots of time but I always at least from my experience found 5/8 wave ant to outperform 1/4 wave ant. Please google my callsign you should be able to spot a pic of my old ### on my Harley in front of my KW.

I built mine at about 6 with the help of my older brother ( Also a extra class ham ) and was a member of the crystal radio society for years Much has been on hold because of my eyes and I have a box of parts for the day I can see well enough ( I hope ) to build more of them .

Not positive here but I think the Larsen that works in the CB range is 1/4 wave and has 200w power handling limit.
Regardless, back to the thread subject:
I'd still switch all of your mounting items over to the other side just to see if it works. -
Sounds right the 10 meter one is also a 1//4 wave now on 144 and 440 mhz they ARE 5/8 wave antennas
-
prob right no matter they work much better than most ant and pretty well last forever, on a small vehicle they are excellent, on a big truck I don't think you can beat a monkey made from Florida, I run a single on my 900L but think on a small vehicle you would be too subject to theft with one of them. My monkey made is over 9 yrs old and still performs well. tom

There is no doubt a 5/8 wave will out perform a 1/4 wave. However, a 5/8 wave on CB would be about 22 feet high. Not something one could use on a mobile.
If you look at some of the ads you will see some claim they are 5/8 wave like the, Firestik ® INDOOR CB 5 ft. 5/8 Wave BASE ANTENNA, but that is smoke and mirrors.

Big_m Thanks this. -
I run a 2 meter one on the car and keep a 29mhz one in the trunk ....

I never understood why 4 wheelers run dual antennas see it all the time on pickups in back of the cab on front of bed about four feet apart. 102 whip or wilson mag or roofmount will outperform those all day long. Hey if you run heat through those and key up do you think you can cook a hotdog between them?
