May b a thread on here somewhere.. but my eyeballs are about to fall out. After 10 yrs otr as company drivers, spouse and I have decided to buy a tractor.
He had driven lots of farm trucks back in the day, and we've been assigned almost everything but a kw or big pete.
Please advise and tell me what we should get... and why. We plan to spend about $50,000...and get something with about 1/2 mil. miles. (Been looking really hard at Arrow and Truck paper)
Thx in advance, Deniese

Wait till the econony recovers. If you can't wait, wait anyway. IMHO.
Sonbell and joendeniese Thank this. -
Probably gonna do it anyway. don't really like the company we are with, after having been with one for 10 years that was bought out by another. We are forced dispatch.. and many of their loads give u an appt time that doesnt allow you to stop for a shower.., food, anything. fuel only, and you better hurry. An owner-operator co. near our home offers a VERY good package. Too, we live in a big farming area and worst comes to worst, we can haul rice or grain or something. I just want to make sure we get the right tractor...

May as well ask the best color of a car too.
Far too general a question IMHO.
You will get into a later model Freightliner vs a KW or Pete for the same price for instance.
Think about what you need the truck to do, what kind of freight it will haul, the empty weight you need it to be, the size of the sleeper, the wheelbase, which motor you want, and so on. After answering all of those questions, a few trucks will stand out from the rest.

What state do you live in? You can get a high 500k mile truck for about 25k if you play your cards rite.

go write a business plan first and figure out that part of it first.
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.leftlanetruckin Thanks this. -
I wonder if they tell the lease fools that particular line in orientation...

Before you go down this route, figure your operating costs per mile.
Fuel alone is .70 a mile (4.20 @ 6mpg) , your fixed costs are .45 = $1.15 a mile and that's not including salary... you are going to pay yourself right ?
Now your going to work for .95 a mile + fsc (.50 a mile if your lucky)
Now you do the math....
BTW, stay clear of Arrow !!
