I have a Wilson 5000 center load mounted to the left fender with 21 ft of 58 coax and can't get the swr under 2.8 on 1&40 Checked ground and coax with multimeter any ideas?

Ok HOW MUCH GROUNDPLANE DO YOU HAVE ? iF YOUR FENDER IS ONLY A FEW INCHES OUT FROM THE WIP AND DOES NOT GIVE YOU ENOUGH YOUR MATCH IS NOT GOING TO BE GOOD .....tHE TOP OF THE ROOF IS ALWAYS THE BEST BUT YOU CSN'T ALWAYS GO THERE AND YOU HAVE TO WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE.
If you use the coax to match things all your doing is tricking the radio and not fixing the problem ... -

Just went with 12' of coax dropped swr to 2.4 will 11.9' make that much of a difference? Or do I need to be at 23.9 or do I need a better coax?

I am interested in the outcome of this... i have a trucker 2000 mounted on a ram/dakota mount on my fender. Lowest SWR i can get is 2.0 on ch 1/40. I have thoughts that my coax might not be the best ( it radio shack coax) so i plan to replace it... would this be good??
Coax Assembly for a Single Antenna System
TS-9CCTM
9 Foot of RG58 Coax (95% Shield) with Right Angle Stud molded on one end. Standard PL259 connector molded on the other end.
This will replace the standard stud mount on most antenna mounts.

I am also thinking of switching from the 5' shaft to the 10' shaft... that would put the tip of my coil at the roof line and all of the whip over the roofline... would that help or waste of time?

Taller shaft will help...And so would doing some RF Bonding of the vehicles body...This is running ground straps off the doors to the door jam (where the hinges are connected) the hood, tail pipes, and fenders...specially the front fender where you have the mount...Body of the vehicle would also need to have ground straps ran to the frame...
Boding will do several things...help make your whole vehicle work as a ground plane better and lower your SWR reading, and help with noise in your receive like motor noises and fuel pump whining...
You should use flat ground braid for grounding, and not round electrical wire... -

You have a lack of groundplane under the antenna .....
You might try placing some wires spread out from the antenna ground point while parked and check if the SWR goes down ... I drive a corolla and on 10 meters have some problems with my trunk mounted wip ... -
Well, if you where getting 2.8 with 21 ft and are now getting 2.4 with 12 ft common sense would tell me to try taking alittle more off and see where you end up.... I would also take the grounding advice i was given and see if that help
Also, when you test the SWR's are you in a open area or around buildings?
You be shocked at the number of people i seen come the the local CB shop ########
there SWR's where 2.5+ and come to find there testing them in the middle of downtown

I had 6' of coax on, the swr was off the chart then tried 8' got it 3 then tried 21' got to 2.8 at 12' was the best at 2.4 I will try 9' today see if that helps and will get some ground straps. All testing done in a big parking lot that's the biggest open area I have till I get out of town over the week end. Thinking about moving the antenna to the roof but that mean either taking it off at night or leaving my truck outside Thank You
