Good job! That relieves me they are auditing your logs! Believe it or not some dont and the cause of them getting shut down by DOT!

Always keep in mind just because you pass a DOT audit on the road does not always mean you are covering up good! When they go into the company and do an audit they have all documentation and load information, that's when they usually find the violations. Most DOT's give 1 hour lee-way in the office, however on the road they usually give up to 30 minutes so you are safe being that close.

Don't shorten a 10 or 34 hour break though that can get ugly

Just a quick question for you Logs....When I get my own authority, how will the DOT do a full blown audit if I am on the road? Would they knock on my door at the house or would it still be done in the truck?

Well they can knock on your door of course. Many times we will get a visit from DOT about 4:45 stating they will be in the next morning to do an audit.
Sometimes they walk in @ 8:00 am (lovely way to start the day) to do an audit.

If you are your own authority and the only one, well I am not sure how they handle that since you "might" be on the road. Usually if it's your first time they will do an audit (supposed to by the book, doesn't always happen) by the 6th month you are in operation. I had a guy who had 8-10 truck and he was never audited so he opened under a different authority because he knew it was time by his DOT profile (the biggest reason you get audited).

Keeping the logs and mainetance in compliance on the road helps prevent them coming in on suprise visits. They usually visit every 3-4 years if you have a good profile.

DOT accidents and to many OOS (out of services) will get you an internal audit really quick!

When they come in trust me they check anything that driver was paid for/handed in with their trip and they will even check the relay drivers. So if a driver relayed with another driver, he will check both drivers.

What they focused on the last audit (2 months ago, which I did very AWESOME PER HIM) is for the driver to be in the location he/she should have been and if they didn't log it on line 4 and had logged it on line 4; would it have caused an HOS violation. If not he wasn't to concerned, however they want the drivers to log line 4 when working but not driving.

HIs comment to logging line 4 was: Anything other than driving will take @ LEAST 15-minutes but should log as long as it takes them.

Few tips I can give you without you asking about the audit side.
He said my drivers out of any company he ever audited was @ least in the same location the receipt said he/she was in. He was VERY VERY impressed as he never went through an audit to where he didn't find a driver in the "wrong" location. Yeah I am bragging, cause I feel I express this very well to my drivers :).

Any other questions I will try to answer :)! Good luck and remember you have more to lose being you are under your own authority, but it can be done!:biggrin_25525:

LogsRus, any driver that can not match a time stamped item to his/her logbook is doing it all wrong. Anything that I turn in to the company that is time stamped is logged at the proper time (+/- 30mins). That is the true art of a good log fudger.

    Naw!
Logging is as E-Z as income taxes.

But if you ask enough questions, it can become quite complicated. Once you get the hang of it though, you can run your whole life by a log book.

I took a look at it again today. I think if I just slow down and take my time I can figure it out. On duty not driving, sleeper berth, pre trip, off duty. Too much! No, I think I'm getting it figured out.
