Old trucker. retired 22 months. Finishing up retraining at Tech college CTD school. Applying for work. I have been turned down by two employers for no apparent reason. I have a suspicion that reporting my retirement and one job on my three year job history is kicking out the app. What gives? Not enough history? Is retirement unverifiable? I alked to Maverick recruiter face to face @ school yesterday and he did not have a clue. Any input on this?

It's probably age discrimination. It's done everyday and hard to prove. Why pay for experience when they can rape the rookies?

You shouldn't of had to retrain. Most companies go back 3 years on experience.

Keep on trying! It might take ten or so before you find one.

Retirement ain't all that special unless you have plenty of hobbies to occupy your time. Have you considered a more casual gig?

I would get a copy of your DAC and make sure there are no lies on there.

Sorry. Left out that I haven't driven since '99. 22 yrs. b4 then. DAC is clean. Yes I have considered other gigs. Recession has nixed most all things. The 'two year recient OTR exp.' thing has spread to even local driving jobs. Nothing to do but keep thrashin'.

Drive school bus? The school districts are always hiring retired folks and if at most you work only 6 hours on/off throughout the day. Just slam the brakes real good if the little ######## get out of line.

Thanks for the suggestion but that would defeat the whole purpose of why I want to drive again. I prefer to be alone AND make money.

What 2 employers did you apply to?Many companies want green as a dollar bill newbies. No exp what so ever so they can train them the way they want to. Maybe less benefits and pay as well.I spoke with a company awhile ago and here's what he told me,exp truckers means bad habits. Not referring to anybody, thats just what he told me.

I agree. Keep throwing enough #### against the wall, and sooner or later something is bound to stick....:biggrin_25525:

My guess is that it is the long gap since you last drove that is causing your problem. Check with some of the training carriers, such as Swift, Roehl, CRST, etc., You may need to go with a trainer for a few weeks to get your feet wet again, but after you get a year or two of current experience you should not have a problem finding a job.

Like CC said it's probably an age thing. Those two that turned me down were not aware of my previous experience. They are Maverick and Schnieder. I'm selling myself w/o mention of exp. as nobody is interested anyway. I think Guitar man may have it-just keep trying. G/Man; if you look closely at my OP; I'm going back to a full school and should test out in about 10 days.

When you get out of CDL school most will need to go with one of the training carriers to get started. That is why I mentioned the carriers that I did. All of them hire inexperienced drivers. They usually put you with a trainer for a few weeks until they feel that you can drive on your own. Unfortunately, with the time gap, most will look at you as an inexperienced driver. Age could be a factor, but I have spoken to some who are older than you who have managed to find driving jobs. If you kept up your CDL you may find a smaller carrier that will hire you. Otherwise, most are restricted to the large carriers who can afford to self insure or take the hit for the higher insurance premiums. Good luck.
