I don't think most people realize how much our world has changed since 9-11.
The background check on prospective drivers is tantamount to getting a security clearance. TSA thinks of truck drivers as potential terrorists.
When I had my business, I would sometimes explode over government requirements for me to hire a driver.
An audit resulting in missing two weeks of an applicant's three year previous history can bring fines up to $10,000!
Insurance companies that cover drivers are under the same scrutiny. Again...supply the paperwork.
The paperwork process for a new driver usually took a week, and that was if there were no hiccups.
We hauled no food. We hauled no fuel....99% of what we hauled was printed material...newspaper inserts!
Did you ever wonder why there are TSA agents at every meat packing facility in the country now? Are they worried some driver will come in with a truck load of explosives and blow up some cows?!
The government has gone wild chasing boogie men. Unfortunately, truck drivers are near the top of the list.
Recruiting offices, no matter where they are, are generally overworked.
You supply what seems innocuous data and they start reviewing it. They have to verify something and end up waiting for that person to return a call.
Meanwhile your application sits and waits.
Finally, they can't verify everything and decide to 'move on'. They deny your app.
they won't tell you why because there's a lawyer sitting behind every corner waiting to pounce on them over a denied application.
Large companies with deep pockets are prime targets.
The law firm that did work for us, contineously told us 'never supply explanations, reasons or information.'
It's a crazy world these days and we're all caught in the vortex.

It is unfair to slander a company and drag their name through the mud because you were annoyed with the hiring process and didnt get approved. Sir, you will find this process true with every company you apply for. Some of it is Federally mandated, other part of the process are designed by them to save their ### if you do something stupid when you work there. You are applying to be a commercial truck driver in the United States of America. You can almost equate it to applying to be a commercial airline pilot, and now more than ever your life will be verified to the exact moment you were born it almost seems like. You will have a lot of responsibility thrown on your shoulders when you become a driver. You should be grateful the process is what it is. IT KEEPS OUR ROADS SAFE!

Now, about Stevens. I went through the orientation at the HQ in Dallas just a few weeks ago. I've personally been in the recruiting office, and other parts of the facility and have seen them work my self and I can tell you on a daily basis those offices are extremely over worked and it is impossible for them to keep focused on 1 person. You will find this true with many larger companies. It is your responsibility to call and email over and over again until you get your questions answered. As for why you were disqualified. The company does not have time to research your background if you do not supply what they ask for. Next time you apply somewhere, make sure you have every single part of your employment history verifiable for them with a simple phone call or letter from clients or suppliers (since you were self employed, letters from friends/family saying you worked doesn't cut it!) Please do not take this as offensive, I am telling it to you straight which is how most people in trucking will tell you. Oh, and by the way, I was disqualified from Stevens for a non-job related medical reason for which I should have not been disqualified per the FMCSR, but that's there choice to allow that to pass or not. So I'm not a company employee telling you this. Please do not come on here and blab about companies negatively for something that is out of anyone's control. Just move on to the next and leave it alone.

This website is read daily by companies, recruiters, drivers, and other logistics personnel and you are not doing yourself or anyone else any good by doing this. Trust me. Happy hunting and good luck!

the recruiter is paid to get people in, not give them the runaround. she was obviously trying her best. she was going to her boss and her boss was going to her's. this is a very litigious business, companies have to protect themselves. many here have had to explain gaps in employment. did you offer phone numbers of some of your professors?

Actually I suspect Stevens is stricter with Self Employed people than most companies. I too had some issues when I applied last year with them though I didn't get quite the run around you did. I would meet the requirements they set out and then they would come up with more requirements they neglected to tell me about earlier (or document anywhere). For instance they wanted my past tax returns to prove I was self employed. So I then gave them copies. After doing that they told me they can't accept handwritten forms and I needed to have the IRS fax transcripts directly to them (which is borderline legal from what I understand). It annoyed me greatly since everyone else accepts them including the IRS. Also if I wanted to forge it I could have just as easily typed it up. I do my taxes myself.

One thing I consider is that some employers just don't like self employed people. They at times form certain biases for instance believing that self employed people tend to be less willing to take any crap or be followers as opposed to mavericks.

Now I'm not saying Stevens is necessarily like this. It's just that your experience plus mine (they also "lost" my application once after previously acknowledging they had it) makes me believe that in my opinion it is a possibility. FWIW, the bad vibes I was getting eventually made me tell them to cancel my application.

Self employment is harder to prove to Stevens satisfaction.
I know...I was self employed ove 20 years.
But copies of my tax returns, company returns, the phone number and name of my CPA, links to stories about my company where it named me as President...were all that were needed.
Sometimes you need to give MORE than requested, so they can get their job done easier.
From the time I applied until I was accepted was less than one week.

@John713 I agree with you! I heard some horrible stories about Stevens Trans. I had a recruiter hang up the phone in my face after asking her about their training program.

No one want letters of recommendation. They want a 1099 and all schedules of tax filed for that year in a self employed situation.
As for the scam, it sounds like you were trying to scam your way in with a shady employment history. BTW, scams are meant to take advantage of an individual.... You were obviously not worth scamming.
