Can a truck with a regular 40 ch CB still communicate with a truck that is using SSB?

If another person is transmitting on SSB on the same channel you are on with your regular CB, you may be able to tell that there is a signal there, but it will most likely be unintelligible.

From back in the day when I bothered, you can understand AM on the same channel while on SSB receive, but there will be a whine from the carrier sent on AM beating with the Beat Frequency Oscillator which is supposed to be generating the missing carrier, not the sideband. The BFO has nothing to do with modulation other than making SSB intelligible. You could get rid of the whine by setting the clarifier to the exact same frequency being received.

I had a converted multiband amateur radio, AM was simulated by sticking one of the sidebands onto the CW(code) continuous wave. It only had upper sideband attached to the carrier wave while set to AM.

The Kenwood 520 from way back when was converted for AM by a similar method from what I remember, there was no AM on the band selector switch.

I had the Sidebander numbers, Iowa was 29W, 29th state I guess. There was another club that had numbers, too. We used to hang out on 16 LSB. That was our call channel.

    :biggrin_2556:OK :biggrin_2556:

guess you mean someone wired the CW switch to make AM by injecting carrer ..... many old radios did this when AM was still used ....

You are correct the BFO replaced the carrer to make SSB readable .....

I can't remember the last time I worked AM .... other that one contact on 17 meters years ago ...

    Not on SSB....

However if the guy with SSB flips the switch back to AM, then yes.

To simplify, SSB (USB, LSB) are just "modes" of AM (what all FCC accepted CB's are) and in order to use SSB, the other party (whoever you're trying to talk to) must have SSB on his radio and must be tuned to the same SSB (either USB or LSB) as you are, in order for the SSB to be useable.

So in other words, if you want to talk to your buddy on 36 LSB, and he's on 36 USB, it's not gonna work....if he's on 36 AM and you're on 36 USB, it's not gonna work....but if you're on 36 LSB and so is he, it will work...you'll need to dial each other in though, but once you do, you'll be able to chat for a longer distance.

Anyone who doesn't have SSB if they happen on your conversation, will hear what will sound like a bunch of garble, sorta like what Charlie browns teacher sounded like.

When 6 meters is open there are a few folks that use AM. 50.4mhz I worked a guy in San Diego from I-70 in Utah once.
