if I am running percentage, I would agree whole-heartedly on that entire concept.
But when someone says the only time I get paid is by the mile and then it's even shorted by going PC Miler shortest and not even giving me practical miles which means I am going to drive 10% or more miles and give them it for free....
you do what you can to maximize your income.
I'll drive it to the governor or the speed limit which ever I can get away with.

... and then they put a fuel economy restriction on you. -
I believe it's been said a few times...
"if you don't like the work conditions, then find a new job."
There are companies I have told them "no thanks" because I did not like the conditions.
This company has tolerable work conditions that are suiting my needs at the moment.
When those needs are fulfilled, I will move to the next position. -
probably as driver, hell, i have had 350 dollar days, AT STARTING RATE, where i only drove 41 miles round trip! thats over 8.50 a mile! -
I'd find another job if I had to put 3000 miles on a truck every week to make decent money. I don't mind working, but holding onto the steering wheel for 55 hours a week sounds crappy....Motownfire Thanks this. -
Hmmm ... work harder or smarter... I used to try and explain that to companies too but the goal of the company was ... harder ... lol.
SOOOO ... I started my own company and this week I grossed 10K on 2500 miles. Not too shabby for a dry van in my opinion !rollin coal and Motownfire Thank this. -
My thought as well.
The next thought is, how much per mile did you make after ALL expenses?
I was trying to figure if going L/O was worth it.
I figured that my break-even point would be around 2200 miles per week.
Less than that and I would be making more as a company driver, more as L/O.
2200+ miles is not hard to do, if you get the right loads and can keep rolling.
I can do that easily with a truck that is not in the shop 20% of the time - like my last one.
But striking the right balance between heavy and light loads, not too much down time waiting for loads, drop/hook vs. live etc., really makes me wonder if going that route is worth it - especially with all the added paperwork. -
dear old dad always said "work smarter not harder" and no it's not always about the money and chasing the all mighty dollar.
I actually enjoy driving, am home on weekends, "only" bring home about $750. it's enough to pay the bills and stash some away. I learned a long time ago , ya ain't getting rich doing this ,so find a spot that is comfortable,( no n. east, no 2 wks out or more, let me drive legal). the less stress the better ,you'll live longer and healthier.Last edited: Apr 15, 2012
Glimmer, SHC and Moosetek13 Thank this. -
That's kind of how I feel about it. Although I still haven't figured why everybody belly aches about the Northeast. Aside from certain sections of I-95 that should be avoided if possible (i.e. New York), it's the same crap as everywhere else.
