Just got back from a meeting at the Traffic Club of Chicago. Focus was on economics of our industry and what is happening.

Every presenter hit on driver shortage and how it is getting worse. One spent a little more time on it and made some very good points.

    - The life style of the OTR driver is not attractive and regulations are making this worse

    - Most avenues for a person to become a driver are also not attractive and in many cases abusive

    - The generation that would be supplying the new driver pool is not interested in skilled positions and what they "expect" from jobs typically takes a person years or decades to achieve. This is not just a trucking issue but across the board in the trades.

    - Pay, while often stated as number one issue in recruiting, has shown to not be a better recruiting tool. Good companies with current equipment who have starting pay scales at $.45 or better have no better success in recruiting than lower paying companies.

An attorney made another good point. The profession of truck driving is no longer respected. Gone are the days that drivers where considered the "Knights of the Road".

    Unfortunately, no solution was given.

    Well, I'd apply except.....

    1. Ain't got the ever-so-precious 6 months recent.....
    2. Don't live in Arkansas, and ain't moving. Quite happy here in Pennsyltucky.

I've got the required years of "verifiable", and plenty more besides. Just no recent. Maybe I forgot what the big round thing in front of me is for?

I would like to drive for a small company like yours but yes, the 2 year thing...

I live in Denver now, doing OTR and pretty much staying between WI down to Laredo and east to SC and everything in the middle of the triangle. I stay out 2-4 weeks at a time, no tickets/accidents or breakdowns. I wish I could run more miles and not be just a number at the company but I guess the insurance companies don't like us. :biggrin_2556:

Will probably be moving to DFW or Austin, TX in the next month or two... seems there's more freight out in the area, at least much more then Denver.

I would advertise that and see if it was true or not.

You could also contact C.R. England. They are a pretty good company. I am sure they will send you a few drivers that meet your requirements.

Well, I put an ad here offering my services as a 15 year driver with a spotless record...134 views...1 response. I always hear owners complaining they can't find good drivers, now I wonder how hard they try.
