On January 24th 2012, my wife and I were running up 69 through OK. It was pouring rain, cold. I had around 40k in the box. We were about 9 miles south of Savannah, maybe 2 miles from where the construction was at that time. 10:30pm I left the truck stop in Stringtown after my 10hr break.

We got about 5 miles south from that construction and a late model dark colored Silverado pulled onto the highway. I was going 70 the speed limit, got into the left hand lane. Well the pickup pulled ahead of me at about 75-80, I thought that was the end of that pickup that I'd see. There is a bend that curves to the right about 3.5-4 miles from Savannah.

Something in my gut told me to back down at the bend, well I backed down to about 58-60. As I rounded the bend in the distance I see headlights, I've seen it before a spinning set of headlights. Someone just spun out. So I started braking. Then I saw the truck go into the ditch. Eh they got a pickup they'll just pull out I thought, I said a little prayer of hope and a blessing for that person an started back on the throttle. I heard boom of thunder and something tell me to stop. I was going about 63-65 at that time.

So I listened to that something and jammed back on the brakes. I got stopped about 40 or so yards from where the truck went in. Grabbed up my flashlight, told my wife to call 911 we're about 4-5 miles south of Savannah on the northbound side, big rig with 4 ways flashing. Then I ran adrenaline pumping vigorously.

I came upon where the truck went into the ditch. I found it rolled over down a 4 foot embankment into a creek, the cab was underwater. Immediately I felt a sense of guilt, sadness, and reprieve that I had stopped. I slid down the embankment and I heard a woman yelling for help, I yelled back that I was there an Emt's were on their way, and made my way to the pickup.

Before she went down the embankment in her spin she hit the guard rail, and it ripped the rear passenger door off.

This 50-60 year old woman was crawling out, although obviously injured she crawled out of the rear pass door. (she felt something push her down towards the floor right after she had hit the guard rail. her words) Well I got her up the embankment and at the guard rail, looked at her. She had some cuts on her face.

I ran back to the truck and grabbed a blanket and some gauze. (my mom is a nurse, so i've had first aid and cpr training) Got back looked her over with the flashlight, she had glass in her cheeks, but missed her artery. I didn't want to remove the glass so I left it. I offered to bring her to my truck until helped arrived as it was cold. She declined, I don't blame her she was complaining of severe back pains on her way up the embankment as well as her right arm. I covered her up until the blanket became drenched. She called her husband and her dad. I could tell she was in shock the way she kept on focusing on money that was her only concern. So we kept her talking, Her husband is a rail inspector for BNSF and was in Idaho I believe at the time. She was a surveillance guard at the choctah casino in Savannah.

Her dad arrived about five minutes after she called, him and I went down and got her purse and various things that were floating in the water. The scary part was the roof was sitting on the top of the seat, we were both relieved that God had done some work and got her on the ground. Otherwise she might have been killed.

It took EMTS what seemed like forever, they finally arrived I told them what she had complained about and what I saw. About ten minutes later the trooper arrived gave my statement.

God deffinetly was working that night, I've seen wrecks before as we all do. Out of all of them I've seen this was the only one to really stick in my mind and run the "what if's?" It kept in my thoughts for a few weeks, and even four months later I still remember it like yesterday.

Anyways if anyone has any information about this woman, or heard through the grapevine. Please pm me I'd like to talk to her and see how she turned out. Thank you for reading, and sorry it was so long. But sometimes and especially when god is getting so far out of touch in today's society a story like this needs to be told as a reminder of what the Lord can and will do for his children.
God bless and be safe out there.

You give truck drivers a good name!!!

Thanks for stopping when so many others would have just kept going...Reminds me of how this great industry used to be.

I've seen em spin out of 44 up through MO alot, I wasn't going to but something kept nagging at me. I've always been one to stop if its a wreck and not just a spin out. After all it is the law, and is a common courtesy. But yeah, you don't see it alot these days. I've only been driving going on 2 years now. The way I see it especially now I'd rather stop and see that everything is ok, than to not stop and hear on the news how someone died from something I saw and neglected to stop and render aid. I don't think I could live with that. I also stop and try to help out other o/o's on the side of the road, I carry a large tool set in my truck. lol. I'm trying to bring back the stories that made me want in this industry as an 8yr old boy. An boy was it different from when i was 8 to now being 22

The way I look at it its better to live as if there is a god and to die and not be anything that comes after, than to be a complete hellyan and find out there is:biggrin_2555:. Great going by the way

There should be a police report written up if you had to make a statement and she had to file an insurance claim. If you call the pd who took your statement, it should have her info on it and you can check with her. I am sure that she would be happy to talk to you!

One reason many truckers don't stop anymore is that they are afraid of a lawsuit-it happens I'm afraid. I tried to stop for a fatality accident when I first started driving and another trucker came across the cb and told me to keep rolling. I couldn't have helped anyway, but being the first to see it is always a shocker. Stopping to help someone is a courtesy though, there are no laws saying that you have to do it. (and many companies frown on it, for legal reasons)

great that you were there and had the sense to help.
As much as i despise your desire to have a god to explain what your brain told you was right, Im happy for you. Wish more of us 'professionals' would care for our fellow travelers whether they be ten milers or thousand milers.

I was a firefighter well before i became a trucker. Most of the time I will pass on accidents because usually there are people already there to help and the only thing I could do would be block valuable parking areas. However If I witness a wreck I will stop and offer not only assistance but statements to first responders because its a duty of being a citizen and screw what my company says. we haul freight. its just stuff. stuff can be late. Hurt humans take precedence.
